Wouldn't that depend on the club and clientele? Bob's Country Bunker (haven't we all played there) likely wouldn't request Iron Maiden. My most recent cover band had a core set of rock tunes (90s/00s) and we'd either rotate some classic rock, blues, or crossover country songs depending on the venue. But they never talked with me...they talked with the lead vocalist...probably trying to get a date with her. :)

What genre are you talking about?

Yeah, Freebird is always the biggest request. Playing in a 3-piece band, it would be near impossible to pull it off right, even if we wanted to. If I play the slide part, there's no rhythm and vice versa. Usually, when someone hollers "Freebird", I flip 'em off and say, "No Charge". That makes 'em laugh and forget about it. :)
As for others:
Cocaine, Keep Your Hands to Yourself, Stairway to Heaven, to name a few.
Lot's of times they shout out band names instead of specific songs. Lot's of Skynyrd, AC DC, Bob Seger, Z Z Top, Metallica, Greatful Dead, Van Halen, and on and on. As Ricky Nelson put it, "You can't please everybody, so you gotta please yourself".

Well said Ratsass, that is why I don,t like being a three peice band. Currently we are 3 piece because one member (utility man) had to leave because of his job and we haven't found someone to fill his shoes yet. We had to drop some songs and Freebird was one of them LOL. I play most songs note for note, we were playing a lot of Santana I prefer playing the melodic older stuff but we can't untill we find that ever elusive fourth member. So we switched formats to heavier music that can be done 3 piece and it is working well untill we can find the person we are looking for.
