JD Summers band with special guest fisherman bob is appearing at the big benefit blues jam at the Trinity Lutheran hospital parking garage at 31st & Baltimore, K.C., Mo 4/11 from 12:00 noon to 4:00. Lots of fine musicians expected. Bring your axes and come out to jam or just come out to listen. JD Summers is one of the finest blues guitarists in Kansas City. Dan Jones will also be there, he's one of the finest harmonica players in K.C. fisherman bob? He plays bass and sings a little too. Enjoy...

I don't even know what the benefit is for. I assume it has something to do with the hospital. Maybe to pay somebody's medical expenses? I guess I'll find out 4/11. Dan Jones filled in for one of my band members in September, the least I can do is the same for him.

Benefits can be fun. Nice of you to fill in, & yeah, it sounds like you owe him one anyway. Do it up, bob!

Catch anything lately?

Went fishing once this year. Nobody was catching anything. Water too cold. The various fishing reports on the lakes in Kansas are pretty much the same. Fishing fair at best everywhere. We've got a brand new small reservoir opening for the first time May 1 right here in Lenexa. Really looking forward to that. Whenever a new reservoir opens up it's usually great fishing for a few years. Over the last ten years I've hit three different grand opening of reservoirs and it's like fishing in a virgin fishery, AWESOME. We also had a reopening of an old reservoir that was shut down for four years and completely renovated. That already opened up January 1 and the fishing reports are interesting there (Douglas County state fishing lake, the county to the west of Johnson County where I'm at). I used to fish all the time there in the early 90's but it became like the dead sea. The damn was all screwed up. Lots of sediment. They couldn't open the dam apparently so the water quality got real bad. It was a big reclamation project that hopefully will reward us fisherman with an improved fishery. The panfish crew is gearing up for a big season. We'll be rushing more meat home real soon....

I haven't even gotten my license yet. Been too busy being sick to do much of anything, but I hope to go to a private lake tomorrow, if the weather allows, & I feel up to it.

This would have been my 1st day back to work today, but 2 of my dogs went missing yesterday. So I'll spend the day looking for them, checking with the ASPCA & animal control & humane societies locally. I'm on the border between 2 counties, so that complicates things.

Guess I'll be tying them up until I can get a fence built. Can't have them being a unisance to the neighborhood (although it's hard to think of ways that my lil pug could be a nuisance - the big one's another matter, & I"m gonna hafta get her into some training classes, I guess.)

Have you looked into electronic pet fences? I know they're expensvie but they work really well and the dogs love having the freedom to run around the entire yard...I might have some time to go fishing tomorrow. I met a few guys fly fishing a pond on the disc golf course. They fished Douglas County lake and say there's already some nice bluegill and redears there. In fact the Kansas fishing report said the fly fishermen were catching them there, I think it was the SAME TWO GUYS. I have to say redears are my absolute favorite fish to catch. I don't think they're native to Kansas. they're a stocked fish but reproduce here. State record is 1.7 pounds. I caught one five years ago that easily was bigger than that. I didn't know at the time what the state record redear was and THREW IT BACK! That fish should be on my wall right now. Redear sunfish, which are also called shellcrackers, are native to Northern Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, basically the southeast U.S. They live in deeper water than bluegill and grow larger. The world record I believe is five pounds. Could you imagine a five pound sunfish? I know there's two lakes where there likely is a state record redear. If I'm going to catch a state record specie of fish it probably will be a redear. I specifically fish for them and have caught some around 1 1/2 pounds and that one HUGE one that was probably pressing two pounds. That was the best fight of any sunfish I ever caught, pulling my four pound test out, making a bunch of deep runs. It fought like a smallmouth bass. I'm an idiot for throwing it back...

Happy b'day, Mary!

Yo, bob - went fishing yesterday & caught a 2 foot channel cat. Wasn't even sure if it was a fish, cuz it was so lethargic until I got it to the boat. Must be cuz the water temps are so low?

I took it home & ate it. It was full of roe. Now I feel kinda bad about it, but I couldn't take it back after I found the eggs in its innards, could I?

No worries the are plenty of fish in the lake. :D
The spawn is the best time to fish. I dont think it hurts the population one bit.

I'm not sure which gamefish are the most common in North America, but I bet channel cats are in the top three (crappie and bluegill being the other two). I consider any fish you can catch on a lure (I catch dozens of channle cats each year on lures) a gamefish.

The organization we're playing the benefit for is C.O.P.P, Care of Poor People and it's a benefit for the homeless. The location is a parking garage located just to the west of 31st & Main across from the Bank of America. There's supposed to be media coverage (TV & radio?) and lots of good musicians. JD Summers is one of the hot young guitarists in Kansas City. He's already got some major notoriety in K.C. I never heard or played with his band before. Should be a fun time for all...
