Venting

Our band has been invited to play at a nationally recognized folk festival based upon what the organizers heard on our website. Our style is vintage rhythm & blues. The guy whose name IS the band name has played this event several times in the past and has played acoustically. We were invited this year based upon our 'electrified' sound, yet our 'leader' wants to play the gig acoustically, because it is a folk music fest. In my opinion, being invited to a folk music fest to play as a full out electric band says a lot about our sound. To me it's an honor to be the only electric band invited to an acoustical event. He thinks the audience will be looking for a dressed down version of our sound, which in my opinion is a big mistake. I'd love to hear some unbiased opinions.

Simple, just ask the person who invited you

Perhaps you could do a bit of a mix, where you start acoustic & gradually move into your newer electric sound.

If they're hiring you based on your lead performer's past show, they'll expect more of the same, but if it's due to the web site sound, they'll expect the electric. I agree with Kramer that you might wanna ask them what they want, but you could do both & prolly get away with it, & have more fun.

Take the stacks and blow their doors off...................................

That way one way or another they will remember you!

Really if the band leader is the true leader your gonna have to do whatever hes comfortable about. If its an acoustic festival then its an acoustic festival. They allready had your man and know what to expect.

Really common sense on my part says why are you even asking this question?

Dont mean to be an ass but with the limited info you gave you already have your answer.

If no one is there to hear that kind of music, you're taking a chance of disappointing a lot of people.
If I go to an 'acoustic festival,' and someone sets up a ton of speakers and blasts me, I'm gonna walk away.
When they're done, I'll wander back . . .
I want to be able to talk to people while I'm listening.
Oh, yeah, I'll remember you all right . . . but not the way you want me to remember you . . .

Listen to what your band leader says in this case. He's been there a few times and done that and is being asked back. When the people at the festival see him again they're going to want the same sound most likely. You want to be ASKED TO COME BACK AGAIN. The man's had success before. Don't fix what ain't broke. Also there's nothing wrong with working up an unplugged act. It could mean MORE GIGS for you. I've been in bands that had both an accoustic and electric act. ALWAYS RULE IN FAVOR OF MORE VERSATILITY AND MORE GIGS. The vast majority of your gigs may end up electric. Doing a few accoustic gigs aren't really going to hurt anway, listen to your leader, he knows his sh*t. Later...

Go with the flow man. Just go with the flow. It's just a gig. who knows what will come of it. Have some faith. Have some fun.

Every person who has responded to this post has offered good advice. I should have waited for the word from the horses mouth... we are expected to play acoustically, we, as a band have talked about starting slow and then picking it up. I thought we should hit them in the face with 'devil music' and then I thought I should just go with the flow and do what any good bass player would do... eat she I T.
