JW 123s Weekend At A Glance

My band Aint Yo Mama was once again off this weekend.

I had my kids. So what to do?

My daughter is an aspiring musician. Thru the years Ive kinda left her alone and tryed to not be a musical influence. Other than she hears me practice all the time. You know playing the same thing over and over again.

Well this sat I decided to record her. Ive done this before but like most egotistical musicians before it was over I would ussually cover up her music with my own ideas. A friend had suggested I just record her and let her do it all. So I set up a mic on her parlor grand piano. She wanted a metronome. My recorder has a click in it, but like most newbies she couldnt handle playing with it. So I said why dont you just put down your piano just like youve been playing it for me. To my amazement in a couple of takes she had recorded her piano. We then moved the mic and set up for vocals. She used one of the Psalms for her lyrics. I ran thru it 3 or 4 times and she scribbled this in and that out. The next try thru we recorded it. She did a great job. I just turned the recorder on and layed on the floor while she did her thing. I was so proud of her. Her meter wasnt perfect, but when she came back with the vocals it fir together. She had a vision in her head and delivered it. Is it a hit or a grammy, probably not. But i learned how great it is for a young person to make music. My daughter is 12, hopefully this will start a life long passion in her for recording.

I would like to add, that if you are an accomplished musician and have kids that play or want too. Sit back and let them develop at their own speed. And if you can try to record them so you have something to listen back too in later years. You might be suprised what they may do.

Sat night I went and checked out 2 bands, Clever Medicine, who has a close friend of mine singing in it and then went down the road and caught a set of another band Paper Castles. I think as a musician its important to support other groups in your area at times. It also can give you ideas on what will work with your band.

To cap off the weekend sunday I went to a MX race. My son 16 was supposed to race but his bike messed up and he wound up running the starting line sign. He came home and said Dad they paid me $50. I thought thats more than I clear some nights with the band. Of course he said I would have rather been racing.

Heres some photos of my kids weekend. Not as much fun as Aint Yo Mama pictures, but hey weve got a killer gig lined up next weekend, so maybe next week I can post some of the wild women of rock n roll in my area next week.

Have A Great Week

JW, I have done the same thing with my kids let them develope the music at their own pace , partly because I've been so busy with bands over the years. One son played drums for 4 years and against all of my advise he gave it up for football he excelled at the drums and I had a friend that gives lessons teach him plus he had the school band thing going and just gave it up maybe someday he will pick it back up. Another son plays Tuba in the Jr. high band and just recentally asked if he could borrow my base Its a P-Bass I don't play the thing very often only when recording my originals so I just gave it to him hoping he will let me borrow it when I record. I thought what a great switch tuba players use the Bass cleff anything to keep them interested without forcing them to do it right. My other son decided he wanted to play guitar so for Cristmas I went to guitar center and they were having a sale and I bought him a Takamine for $300.00 that just rocks its butt off I mean that thing sounds better then my $1200.00 Tak. I'm jealous any way I gave him all my old Mel Bay books (he has a real good one) entitled the Mel Bay Complete Guitar Method. it not only teaches you the rudiments and how to read standard notation and play guitar it also touches on some theory.

I think it's just awsome when we can involve our children in the things we love. Both my sons are musicians. And they are good with a rifle as well.

MeI thinks those blondes look like they may have more fun together.

Cool, I only heard her play a little for a minute or two while I was there but it sounded like she does pretty well for her age. Glad you're getting her into recording.

I tried to get my niece's son into guitar, he got one and they brought it over for me to set up, I cleaned it up and put on new strings, set the intonation and action, all that, and showed him a couple of chords when they came over to pick it up. He tinkered with it a month or so and video games seemed to get more of his attention, so the guitar sat in the corner and gathered dust for a couple of years.

My niece brought it over last summer so I could restring it, nut had been broken so it's sitting there waiting for a new one now and he hasn't touched it in 3 years...oh well, I tried...someone had tried to put heavy gauge acoustic strings on it, (strat copy) and broke a couple of the nut slots out.
