From the first note,first word,to the last note last word and every thing involved. thats a work of art . It would be a miracle for me to actualy finish something Im writing before jumping to something else. Its great that people can do that.

Its hard to see a song though to the end, at least for me but thats just me. Iv got songs and songs Iv started and never finished. It seems to be a curse. It has to be finished to have a life.

Oh man I'm with you. I think its natural to be a mental channel surfer. Ya know once you start a project it's all new fresh and exciting. The closer the project comes to completion the more it seems like work. The drive fades some and our energy get distracted by a "new" fresh project.
I does not seem to matter if it's song writing, planting a garden or building a home. Breaking a project into smaller accomplishable goals is a trick I use but with limited success.
It took me four months to install my dishwasher the wife bought.
Fortunatly, songs, for me, just pop out of no where. To be honest everything our band does is in a constant state of evolution.

Ive known potently good composers like that.
Sometimes I think it's a matter of being TOO serious about the tune. Most of my more successful tunes were composed very fast. If it seems to work, let it be. Don't try to "improve" it to death. Most likely, refinements will emerge over time in performance. Get it to where its playable, then take it to the street. It's kinda like sighting' in a rifle, get it close, shot it, then adjust.

I've recently helped someone write their first song, and it was really good... I did very little of the writing... then every time he played it for mr over a few weeks, he just kept trying to make it more & better... now it's just over drawn out babble!

Save those bits and pieces of songs.
When you get 50 - 60 of them, you can start stringing them together into complete songs . . .

That happens to me now and then. When it does I do one of two things: I listen back to what I've written through MIDI tens of times until something else flows from my head to the page, or I do what RhythmMan said, and store them away for later use. I sometimes find myself coming back to those unfinished works months, or even years, later to complete them.

It took 2 years to finish one o my songs (Reprieve) and it turned out that the part that was written first, was actually the bridge. I had been stuck on it until I realized that the story had no beginning or end. then it took about a half an hour.
