GOT CANNED!

Well.. I knew it was eventually gonna happen... I've been juggling 2 bands for a while now and one of them is booking like there's no tomorrow which in turn is not giving my other band room enough to get a gig in... My band "PanikAtack" consists of very top notch musicians and it was my project that I started by myself from day one... we haven't been out that long so we're still in the showcase mode... but we are getting unbelievable critique everywhere we play!

The other band "Decades" is just a basic classic rock band that plays your basic runof the mill classic rock tunes (Sunshine of your love, Dirty Deeds, Born to be Wild, etc...yawn) but they've been out for 8 years and have a following and many gigs... Well PanikAtack got a coupe of real important gigantic venues coming up and it's an opportunity I just can't refuse...the dates just so happen to fall on 2 of the Decades shows which are 2 months down the road. I politely told the bassist I couldn't make those 2 shows (out of about the next 30) and he freakin' went ballistic and told me my services weren't needed anymore because I'm more into PanikAtack then I am into them! ... Huh?? :? Wow... the guys in PanikAtack are each in 2 other bands and I'm willing to work around their schedules... I was warned about this guy and I made it clear from the beginning that sometimes this was gonna happen... He's definitely got anger issues because if he were smart, he would've kept me on at least until he could replace me...

I am a little pissed off because this band was putting constant cash in my pocket every weekend but I still felt very strong about getting my project some cool gigs and I'm definitely not one to be controlled so we are going to run into each other as we play the same places and know the same people.... I just pray I keep my temper in check... Last time I lost it on an imbecile, the ole lady had to bail me out of jail... breathe in...breathe out....breathe in .....breathe out...

damn Crip.. That sucks, but look at the bright side, if the guy is that much of a prick, you don't want to be in a band with him anyways..

Here's something to make you feel better:

Been there done that. No sense getting yer panties in a bunch over some twitnit, Crip. Just grin & know you're doing just fine without him.

I'm sure you could get a buncha other gigs if you should decide to look.

It's always best to stay with ppl with whom you can be confortable, imho.

Ppl that make me wanna hit something ain't good for my rosy complexion.

Sorry to hear that Crip, hey Its their loss right! you are a great guitar player and it would have been in they're best interest to just find a sub for those two gigs I kind of believe that these things happen for a reason and that reason may not be clear now but it will be in the future.

I just found out a while ago I am gonna be in a situation pretty soon.
In Jan of last year our drummer left us for a band that makes a little more money than we do, I was happy for him and said good luck man just honor your obligations with the gigs we have that you have committed to. He said no problem well he didn't he left us in a bind.
The thing about it tho was this other band had been hanging around acting all buddy buddy with us the whole time they were stealing our drummer (he was really good) wow they haven't been back to see our band since, go figure. Anyway A regular venue we play it is a festival type gig real cool big stage and crowd that constantly runs every weekend and they have an early band from noon to 4:00pm and a later band from 6 to 10 I scheduled the early spot and guess who has the later spot you guessed it the drummer stealin C#!*kS#%*ers.
How would you guy's handle this?

The only problem with this gig is the first band needs to kind of hurry and get their stuff off of the stage, I have been the later band and know how it is when the band before you won't get there stuff off of the stage so usually I am very co-oporative but maybe not this time Mwa ha ha!

Meh, I'd take the high road JH. Nothing to be gained from being petty. Show them you're better than they are by being pros.

To Mr. Crip it's tough to lose a money gig. If their shows were booked first they may have some basis for an argument but firing you seems both reactionary and short sighted. As others have said it's probably for the best. Same advice as I gave JH (for what it's worth) Take the high road. Jail sucks.

I hear what you're saying but #1. These gigs are months away

#2. They knew my situation when they asked me to join them and I advised them of this predicament and they said that they were fine with it

#3. Their drummer couldn't make a gig... only gave 1 weeks notice and they found a fill-in for him!

Frig those arseholes, Crip,

I always though the mates in Panic Attack seemed cooler anyways.
Now you can devote more time to them.

Maybe you should cover some of decades material with Panic Attack, and give 'em a little competition!
All's fair in love and bands.

In my opinion you're better off. I know it hurts economically, especially in this stinking economy, but I have never really appreciated band members that were in other bands. There's always too many conflicts. I don't like the idea of having to check with the other band members when I get a gig offer to see if they play the gig or not. I've lost too many gigs over the years with band members who were in other bands. What might be better for you is to contact as many bands in your area that play what you play and put yourself out there as a fill-in while keeping Panikatack as your main priority band. Sounds like you really weren't impressed with Decades anyway. Hope everything works out for you.

J Haley - I agree with Jon, take the high road. No sense in being any part of trouble, it can easily come back and bite your ass later. Be Mr Nice Guy, help them if necessary, be a pro about it and don't let them see you are pissed. Your reputation may hang on someone sitting there watching who you have no idea can do you lots of good as long as he or she doesn't see you show your ass.

Crip - That sucks. But I'd walk away and forget them, the other project is more professional to begin with, you've been with it longer and are committed to it, Go for it. Yeah it sucks, they had plenty advance notice and could have - no, should have - worked with you, and it really stinks that they did work with someone else on shorter notice, but like I said, Panik Attack has been your primary focus for a long time, take it and run with it.

Crip, Im sorry for your loss. Not the group but the income. Its tough to find steady money these days in a club gig and if a groups got it going on its hard to let go.

I was actually in a similiar situation a few monthes ago. I talked to the other group and as far as I know we are cool these days. They arent playing near as much as my band, but they are still out there. I run into them sometimes and we seem cool.

JH, I would take the high road.

To both of you guys. I would say calm your anger down. Ive posted many times on here where I blew my top thru the years with someone on some musical issue only to realize later that I would have to deal with them again. In my area the musical community is small. Im talking about active musicians and club owners. You just seem to keep running into the same folks over and over again. A lot of people come in and out of it, but the active players stay the same. So my advice to each of you is to keep your cool and never let them see you sweat. Rise above it all, if you can.

To end I always figure that things basically happen for a reason, and are pushing you to something else better. So keep your heads up and keep rocking.

On a side note, my bassist has informed us he is traveling to Nashville to audition for some other outfits that might put him on the road. Theres a side of me that is jealous or mad, but really if he can find something that works for him and pays his bills from playing music then I have to support his decision one way or the other. Im sure nothing he gets into will be as fun as our deal. But I love the guy like a brother and hope the best. So Imay be in a similiar situation over the next few months and have quite a few things booked to deal with. We will see, but Im not going to lose any sleep over it, just roll on my merry way.

I got to echo the loss of income sentament Crip. Moneys tight, nothings free. But your project should come first. At least that is the way I see it.
I will say one for you bro. But I feel it's a step in the right direction.
You always speak (type) with such pride and energy when it concerned Panic Attack. I never felt that from the other band postings you wrote.
