Hello all, I'm new to this site but I think it is a killer site and love the set up. I have tried to contact some bass players but it won't let me, it gives me a option to "buy" an account. Do I need to purchase to contact others?

Yes, you need a paid membership to contact others.

Man, when I was in Newark, Ohio, back in the '70's that whole area was hoppin' musicwise! Hope you can find what you need.
