Roller Derby

This is a little off musical talk.

But, sat night I had my first sat night off for quite a while and went to womens Roller Derby in Memphis TN.

Women on roller skates smacking each other around and falling on concrete. What more could a rocker ask for?

They had some radio promotions going on and told me they sometimes have band support, so I thought I would share it with folks on here. This sport is springing back up all over the place. It might be a place for musicians to get a gig. There were around 500 spectators there. I dont think it would be a good paying gig, in fact you would probably have to do it for free, but the exposure might be good for some up and coming bands in different areas. With the radio support it might be cool. I guess it qualifies as an extreme sport with uses a lot of music. I dont think you would have to play a 4 hour night, maybe just a few songs. So you original acts with edgy music might have a place to play. And if you are a female band you would probably be in a great place to expose yourself.

They play 2 30 minute sessions and basically they have 2 gals lined up behind the pack from each team. These gals are called jammers and have to go thru the pack, whoever gets thru first is in a position to score, they get a point for each opposing member they pass the second go round. They have 2 minutes with a group then they change jammers or scorers. Its a pretty simple format. But these women were knocking each other all over the place. I used to race dirt bikes and have hit the ground pretty hard myself and know what that feels like the next day or two. All I can say is a lot of those gals are hurting today.

The match we saw was one sided The Angels Of Death beat the Prisskilla Presleys 181 to 42 or something like that. Thats another thing about this sport all the players refs and everyone involved have these alter ego names. Its a combination of skating, wrestling and music. Pretty cool for a night off from the club scene, and the crowd was biased toward young women, something some of you guys might get a kick out of.

Have a great day and thought i might share this as another avenue to get your music out there.

lol It's ok Robin, Raquel would make any woman jealous.

Roller Derby is fun.

Plenty of HUGE women, as in tall, not fat, although I bet there are a few that rock the arena when that fat rear end hits the floor.

I like tall chicks!!!! Save the good boobies for the tall ones, not the small ones!

My daughters roll with the columbia quad squad. Brass knuckles brandy my 25 yr old baby has been skating with em about 2 yrs. they kicked the Savannah Derby Devils in a match Sat ngt 171 to 51 or something so it was a little wopped up also. There was a crowd of about 1500 maybe more. 1 of the refs the Rev Jamison is the new drummer in our band. i wouldnt be suprised if yall hear alot more about the derby everywhere as its a lot of fun. there was also a local band who got a lot of promo working with the derby last year. We were thinking about setting up for some fun during one of their matches which go for 3-20 min sets with 15 min breaks. Check em out at www.columbiaquadsqad.com[/url]

Not interested. I wouldn't ever want a woman or a pet who can beat me up. LOL

Sounds almost like MMA on skates.

If we had this around here, I'd prolly go just to say I seen it - once.
