DIBBITZ!

I just got a call from our drummer. It seems he had a little mishap last night. The outside spigot froze at his house, & flooded his basement (our studio).

He managed to save most of the equipment. He says there's one monitor that looks kinda swollen, but the rest all looks dry. His cat awoke him to the problem, & wouldn't let him sleep until he investigated. I think that's a little bizarre yet cool.

His house is pretty new, only two years old. I finished his basement (that's how we met in the 1st place). Now he reported that the floor is ruined, the walls will have to be replaced cuz the insulation got wet, which means the drop ceiling will also need to be redone.

This is bittersweet news, really. Looks like I'll have work for a cpl weeks, & some material for my out-building that I'm saving up for. Unfortunately, it also means the band will be on hiatus until we get it all back togather, unless we can get everyone together at Dddonie's for practice the next cpl weeks.

I feel sorry for him, cuz he was up all night running up & down the stairs carrying all that hefty stuff with only his wife to help, & she's kinda small!

So he's got some outfit out there with heaters & dehumidifiers & the carpet's all ripped up. Man, he's gotta be bummed. I did a great job on that basement! Bead-board walls, beautiful trim, berber carpet (which I HATE) - it looked really good. Hope the insurance covers it all. (His house was a kit. I didn't have nuffin to do with the spigot!)

I put my own outside spigot in when I moved here. I bought a freeze-less unit designed for 12 inch block, while the block in my basement is 8 inch. Never had any trouble with it in 12 winters, & it still works year-round.

(In case you were wondering about the title of this thread - my son, when he was a toddler, used to say "dibbitz" when he meant "dammit." It always stuck with me, for some weird reason!)

Hey Phil, sorry to hear about your drummers house. What a drag that would be. Hopefully he has the insurance to cover it. Seems there's always something needing fixin' around the house. Sounds like a good, but sad country song...

dude didn't shut off the water to the outside spigot?? Ouch!

He should've known...

But chances are the insurance won't cover "flood" damage. I know mine doesn't, and I'm nowhere near a flood zone.

Well Philby, in 4 hr 38min you can be here in a nicely cramped dungeon with no windows BUT, Its exquisitly decorated with all the gear ya need for practice..Yep, Ive insulated some outside plumbing in my time.Used to think oh now come on , it wont freeze hard /long enough here in WV to warrant this kinda labor.I guess ya dont appreciate the job youve done till ya hear a story like this.Yeah , I worked for a guy OH that has those big fans and heaters etc. and man they can dry out a basement damn quick!. Load the boys up in the van FRI evening tell gtr player to bring his pedals, thats all ya need. Play as loud/long as ya want.Yall can crash here, head back SUN.

Ouch. That sucks, man. Glad most of the equipment is okay. One of our guitarists got his basement half-flooded bout 2 weeks ago when it first started snowing by the inches. He had to change the tiles and all that crap :?

It realy sucked coming home from my girls dads funaral and seeing all my gear under 4 feet of water. Im glad you where able to save your gear.

Yeah, I installed a custom floor in that basement, with plywood over wood strips & foam. Now, of course, the plywood is ripping the wood strips out of the concrete & warping all over the place. That was a nice floor system, but I don't think I'd recommend it for many situations. It was the drummer's design, & I DID warn him that it would pull itself up, but I wasn't trying to wish it on him, for crissake!

Talked to Dddonnie, & it looks like we'll be practicing at his place maybe this weekend, so perhaps it ain't a total loss, if the drummer's up to it.

John - thanks for the invite, but I doubt any of us wants to travel 4 + hrs to practice LOL

Kramer - I don't need to turn off my water at the source. The spigot I have shuts off at least 2 inches on the inside of my basement. If my drummer'd gotten this system, he wouldn't have this problem.

I don't think that busted water pipes constitute "flood damage," though. That's water from the inside workings of the house, & that's covered, I'm sure, unlike a seeping basement floor from an undergraound spring, or an overflowing river-caused kinda flood.

Oh NO! That is a nightmare. Your (er, his) cat deserves some of the *good catnip*. I'm glad "most" of your equipment is still intact. I hope the recovery goes well and your plans are successful.

I finally got our water lines thawed out. Luckily no pipes were damaged.
(what we need is more global warming)

Double dibbitz!
I hate it when sh*t happens like this. We dont have basements in East Texas much. Or in Texas at all. Too damn much water in the ground around here for those things. Or so I am told.
I hope you equipment survived. We all make sacrafices to invest in that stuff. If the general public only had a clue.

Man that really sucks, I know he's really bummed. I one monitor is all that got trashed, you're lucky. I agree some catnip is in order.

Same thing happened to my niece a few days ago and I had to fix the pipes, it had been repaired before but a plastic compression fitting was used, it gradually pushed off the pipe and broke loose during the really cold weather a few days ago, flooded the bathroom floor and sprayed water all over everything. 1/2" pipe wide open, not sure how long it ran, that's a lot of water...fortunately I didn't have to crawl under the house in the mud and muck, got a metal fitting this time that should hold for a while, going to try and get them to completely replace the pipe when better weather gets here. I guess she was more fortunate, no music equipment to get trashed out, just a few towels and a kitty litter box, some makeup on the counter...floor was already down to the bare plywood from the previous one, I won't go into that...

Sucks! Not only do you get water damage. But you have to pay for the damed water too.
Sounds like a Jim/Paul tune.

sans - we don't have no city water out in these parts. It's all well water. It did, no doubt, cost him some electricity, but it was extremely fortunate that the well didn't run all night, lest he burn up the pump. Yeah, the cat deserves some "nip," for sure!

Philby,
If that pump is a submersible, it's unlikely that it would burn up from running continuously. As far as the electric bill, that WOULD be a problem. Kinda like my reliable ol' Peavy m-7000 power amp, can't hurt em from runnin' them, but (like a true rocker) they like to suck the juice!
