The Passion Of The Mancini

I'm wondering if this is natural, wide-spread phenomenon, or if it's a regional thing...

Seems like every really good guitarist I've met over the last 10-20 years has had this thing for Mancini's Pink Panther Theme. Most of them get all glassy-eyed when they talk about doing it on stage. I'm amazed at how many ppl I've talked to refer to this ditty with awe in their voice.

I'll admit that it's a great work of artistry, but I wouldn't put that much emphasis on it, myself, & I doubt I'd ever want to do it in your average dance band.

Personally, I think it would be agreat tune to play in front of musicians, & that's about it, unless I was going to showcase it in a floor show kinda situation.

Talk to me, ppl!

Its wide spread  ..NM,IL, OH, IA,WV,TN,TX states Ive lived and played local at least 2 yrs and the diddy was played by EVERY BAND I was in prolly. When Im playin bass, I play it subconciously to this day at gigs when sound checkin, or just tryin to get attn. from a 25 yr old hottie. I really dont know why I choose it?..Ill play Barner Miller, Boogie Oogie Oogie,Then Stevie W , "I wish" bass line. I think its something just to check tone and dynamics.....I guess......One piano player in Nashville (Hey Mark) was obsessed with it.Played the damn thing for 10 min as a break tune.. Everybody would leave the stage after 3 min of it..I always stayed to provide RC...

There have been sightings in the Bay Area as well. Local authorities are aware of the situation and have set up "Passion" hotlines. Please don't approach or try to subdue guilty parties as it has been categorized as "higly infectious" by investigators.

Yeah, they get all sparkly-eyed when they talk about "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," too.

Hell, even Danny Gatton covered that one.

I've had to do that one a few times with ppl.

"Take 5" is another one.

Everybody & their cousin have done these to death, haven't they? I'll bet it's the guitar teachers doin' it!

LoL... I don't know that one. Never bothered to learn it, but I LOVED the cartoon. In my top 3 all time favorites.

The Peter Gunn theme has been played to death too. The Pink Panther theme is one of those really cool jazzy numbers that people love not so much for the music but it reminds them of the Pink Panther. I always liked the themes to a lot of different TV shows and movies (I love the Batman theme song from the 60's). We put some of those theme lines in some of our instrumentals. It's fun to throw some of those in tongue-in -cheek. Getting the crowd to chuckle once in a while is a good thing.

Henry Mancini lived near me in Florence Kentucky when I was a kid. I loved his arrangements and when I found out he liver nearby, I was kinda starstruck.
yeah he did write some cool sh**t and yeah I think it would be a challenge to take that song into new territory, and I would consider it if I had a good band.
