Hey Gang,
Ive been reading over posts concerning guitar effects units and havent found much discussion on using them to directly interface to a sound card or other interface.(No amp)
Just wonderin if some of you record this way and could suggest units that would be easy to operate without tons of bells and whistles.I know white noise will be a factor.Im just lookin for some good 70's soundin distortion/ tube overdrive, chorus , flanger, and some verbs.Something simple for around 100$.Im not a gigging gtr player persay so its not overly important that I have pedals to quickly change parameters.Just lookin for some ideas.
Thanks, '
John

The limelight cover in my profile I did with plugging my GNX3000 directly into the recorder. Came out well. I can use it direct to PA on stage as well. It's pretty sweet, although, admittedly, it CAN NOT sound as good as my Marshall half stack.

I use Line 6 and it is plugged in directly to the interface. I like it a lot. Though I did customize everything on it. There are vintage sounds to be had from it. And as you can hear from my demos - no nose, even with stock Fender pickups.
The best part (IMO) is that I can also plug it in via USB and adjust everything with a regular computer software on it. I am hopeless fiddling with all those buttons and a little LED screen.
Cost? I do not remember. I bought it long ago.

I plug a digitech RP 250 direct into the computer via USB CABLE.
It's pretty quiet. And as AlexanderN does, I use the software from digitech to make adjustments to the unit (Opens up MANY more adjustments).
I think I paid like $150 for the RP 250.
It has all the effects your looking for...and quite a few more. The expression pedal is used a LOT more than I ever thought I would...so I would SERIOUSLY recommend getting one with the pedal (line 6 , Digitech, Behringer...just get the pedal).
See the last 2 vids in my profile for stuff recorded with the RP 250
On "No one like you"
I didn't synch the sound up quite right (I was a little slow at the start...and synched it up there...so the rest of the song looks like i'm fast) but you get an idea of the noise level (remember, this is compressed on MY end AND Youtube's end), But not bad for my 2nd try with that unit.
And Du Hast well...it was my first attempt...messed it up a lot (played the whole chorus wrong LOL)

Jesus boys, now Ive been around for a while .What happenin to a simple effects unit that has verb , chorus, flanger, dist. with 2 simple freakin balanced 1/4 in outputs and and foot switches to engage? Now damnit I know they existed..

I dont have USB, I dont need recording software, I dont need drums..Line 6 had some nice lookin units but neither had dist, and had everything elseI didnt want..Digitech, Korg etc about the same.Ive looked at 100 units and none of them are what I described.I may have to go back 25 yrs to find what I need
Thanks for the replies..

I also use the GNX3000, I had a problem with the software and the lack of suport caused me not to use there usb interface, I use it for efects and amp modeling, but my iterface is a lexicon lamda It was under $200.00 and it comes with qbass le4 recording software. I like it because it has sevral diferent was to input sound. GOOD LUCK there is alot of stuff out there, I am on my third set of software and usb interface and im still not completly saticfied

Kidd, I'm kinda thinking that they don't bother making as many with just a few effects anymore as they just can't justify it...You can get a modeler with dist, flange, chorus, compressor, gate, and a bunch of other effects for about $100...they probably can't make them with fewer effects for any less...and they would have to sell them for less.
Try E-bay for like a POD 2.0 should be able to find one for under $50

John that made me laugh, thanks for the chuckle, I relate to what you're saying.
We are living in a digital world running at breackneck speed, as soon one learns of one gadget another ten are dumped on the market and the cycle starts over again. I too want to get a FX board but when I see 1 inch thick manual that come with, I get turnd off.
What you are looking for if I understand you right is an analog FX pedal, you should try on E-Bay coz I haven't seen analog FX stuff in music stores in a while.
Good Luck

Hey FW,
Ya know I play most weekends as a drummer or bassplayer for diff bands but I never think to ask or look to see what those guys are usin. Im sure most of it is older analog or early diggy stuff.I doesnt look like this new crap. But hell yeah , I feel like Ive been in a prison from the last 5 yrs.No ya cant do that now, NO , that doesnt exist anymore, NO that cable wont fit, No, thats the wrong formatt, you'll have to up grade. They cant even make a F ing Boom Box that will play Mp3s. Damn , all I wanna do is bang on a drum all day, look how complcated its gotten.Yeah , I dont have an E bay account and have never bought anything on line..Music 1-2-3 just about ripped my ass off usin a debit card. Yeah , Im gonna go down to a music store tomorrow that might have some old stuff..Wish me luck, becuase Im gonna need it...JA HEEEESUS..How'd we get here? What happened to my planet? Has anybody seen my Thorazine and Elavil..

Which one (unit) is it Alexander?
It is Line 6 Pro, the floor model. But you can get the same tones out of a smaller (cheaper) version of it that does not have the metal frame and pedals. The outputs are left and right channels in 1/4 jack or a stereo jack for headphone output. It digitally models different amps including vintage amps and produces rather decent tube-like tone.
Here is a picture of it:

I like the "red-box" with my ole mxr 10 band graphic eq along with the dual modified mxr 'distortion+" circuits that I built into my guitar - in a pinch just get 2 of 'em and plug 'em in one into the other. I'm livin' in the same same world with U bro!! All 1/4" jacks!! Gottaluvit!
BTW- anybody know of a realistic sounding Leslie guitar fx out there?
