I have to make this recommendation to all teachers.

I strongly suggest using this workbook:

That will help them organize their practice routine and keep a record of their progress and achievements (also their weaknesses)

I've been using this system for more than 3 years now with all my students, and it makes a big difference in their consistency when comes to practicing their instrument.

I made out my own form for them to fill out at home, monthly. In it, the student had to list what he thought were his major accomplishments for the month, & what areas he was having the most trouble in. I'd give out sheets for them to fill in their daily practice times, too, early in our relationship. Kept them on their toes, & let me know how often they worked on their lessons. (Parents filled 'em out for the younger student.) Twice a year, I'd have them critique me, as a teacher. ( I quit doing that after awhile.)
