I started out singing and playing in church my dad was the rev james a crabtree out of pineknot ky,I sang with my sisters, brother and dad,we of course were known as the crabtree family .my dad was the first born out of 16 kids when we would go over to my grandparents house it would be a downright bluegrass and gospel festival all my uncles and aunts sang and played mandelines, banjos, fiddles, guitars ,dobros anything with strings.I was raised on jim reeves ,johnny cash, buc owens.later I started playing up beat country then rock(devils music my dad said)anyways I play music cause I love it,its the one thing in life im actually good at and I get alot of enjoyment sharing it with others and I can actually make a difference by playing at benefits helping people less fortunate than me.I get a kick out of people singing along with the music or tapping their feet, and yeah im looking for that. the money ,free drinks and yeah boobies too are just an added bonus

You play music for sex drugs, as in viagra and cialis? I can't remember any of the bandmembers I've played with over the years doing viagra at any of our gigs. Our drummer I think does viagra. He's lost some of his sight because of it. That kind of creates a dilemma. Would you rather have it and not see where to put it, or not have it and see where it can't go? Later...

My Dad played the piano and I was his no. 1 fan from my very first memories, in the 5th grade, the orchestra teacher from the high shcool I would later attend came and brought a violin, viola, cello, and bass violin with him. The first time he ran the bow across the strings of the violin I new I wanted to play that instrument, the next year in the 6th grade I joined the orchestra and played violin in the 6th, 7th 8th 9th and 10th grades, when I was 12 I borrowed an acoustic guitar bought a Mel Bay Chord book and started to teach myself guitar which progressed better than I thought I got into my first band when I was 15 and never looked back was playing semi pro by the time I was 18 and have been gigging ever since. It is in my blood. I tried to quit once for about 2 years, but found that the only time that I was really myself and a complete person and happy is when I continue to express myself in a musical way. :D

Semi-pro? I thought if you got paid once for playing it made you a professional musician. I'm a pro. lol.

Yeah, I kinda quit (or was playing a lot less [until I found this site and all the good people here]) but, like you, if it's in your blood and part of you, you cant just give it up without giving up part of yourself and your soul, I've found.

Oh, J , you have the 'red-x-syndrome'-- the Doctors who cured Black 57 could probly cure that if you asked them nicely.. :)

..and Dr. Blackward.. YES!!! That was what I was trying to say!!

..and Fisherman Bob-- Your wife would probably agree that if you didnt see Alice again it would be a better thing .. nharrrr :D

Back-in-the-day, I had no clue what I wanted to be. I like music and got a kick out of playing in the middleschool band. But it was not unti I saw Elton John on David Frost that I realized that music was loveable, special and if anyone felt that strongly about it it could be a professional career. I pretty much realized that I was, not going to be, but I indeed was a musician. I can see the seriousness of that resolve more now that I am fifty years old. Ugh, he inspired me so much. He will be performing at the Honda Center which is a 2 minute drive from my house. However, I doubt that I will be going to see him. We are being wise with our money noww at Christmas time.

I had an E.J. album and learned all of the music on it. I was also impressed with Jean Luc Ponty who was featured on E.J.'s album.
Now, how I became interested in jazz was my dad gave me a Frank Wess album and I was impressed that a flute could be used in jazz...imagine that. THEN there was Jethro Tull and I knew I was going to be just fine. Then the highschool band director encouraged me to take up the oboe because there were fewer oboe majors in college than flute majors. Okay, I'll be an oboe major. Something that should have never happened. Flute was me, flute is me. I am back to my flute and I am home to stay.

Many musicians influenced me but Elton gave me the kick and caused my to become entranced in this wide world of art.

LOL, I call it semi- pro because to me a pro don't have to work a day job, at one point in my life I did try to be a "pro" and learned pretty quick this just wasn't going to support my family, I started a family way to young my oldest is 28 and I was 22 when he was born, so I have remained a person that works a day job and moonlighted playing music for the past 32 years.

I do nothing but music. I am a teaching assistant in the music department during the day. Although it sees like my most important part of the day is setting up a gazillion chairs for the classrooms, I also assist in teaching and I accompany some of the classes. I also teach flute lessons in homes plus I have 2 studios. That pays the bills but I also compose, arrange and performing. If I am not doing music, I am paying bills, sleeping or having sex with my husband and not in that order

If you play music and get paid for it then you're a pro. Doesn't matter if it's full time or part time, as long as you get paid for it. Unfortunately it seems lately that making money at music is getting to be more and more difficult. I don't know whether it's this stinking economy or people finding more ways to rip us (musicians) off. Something's got to be done to make conditions better for us hard working musicians, even us part-time pros. Later...
