I wasn't sure how to phrase that, exactly. I mean are there any musicians here into alternative, world beat, fusion or non traditional music forms? Sound off if you are, and tell me what you do.

Well, i suppose i would fall into that catagory. At the moment im in a three piece group doin world beat/jazz/bluegrass/funk/folk fusion of sorts. I play guitar, banjo, dijd and the native american flute. Its a very worldly sound. I would like to put an Aeolian wind hard in the mix eventually, but im not quite sure how im going to pull that off yet.

I play MUSIC. Can't categorize it and really don't want to. Does that count? Sorry I couldn't answer your question in more detail

Wow, that sounds really interesting bryan. When you get some recorded, can you post a clip? I'd love to hear what your group has created. I played so many different types of music over the years, but in the last five have really been delving into fusions of various forms. I truly love it, it inspires on all sorts of levels.

I'm a hardcore bluegrasser really. At least for the last 10-15 years.
I've played in some classic and southern rock situations, along with country and even some motown/r&b. But the vast majority of my musical development and stage experience has been informed mostly by bluegrass.
But I'm feeling the need to branch out. I'd like to play some country inspired rock music, but not the stuff comming from Nashville these days. I've always been a fan of the Dead, The Band, Dylan, Prine, Neil Young,Graham Parsons/Byrds, etc. In the last few years I've discovered Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt.
Am hoping that I can locate one or two folks with similar tastes, but its going to be difficult in the area I live.

That sounds very cool. One of my long time music writing partners is the son of a Bluegrass legend on the stand-up bass, Bill Lowe. This friend tells me all these stories about how the giants of bluegrass would come around on Saturday mornings for the usual "porch music" sessions. Apparently one day Earl Scruggs snuck into my pal's room, as he was still sleeping, and thumped him on the ear telling him it was time to get up and water the horses

.
But back to topic, don't you find that the mixing of several traditions or music types can really inspire your writing? The problem with remaining so genre specific is that you can stagnate from all the commercial expectations placed on that genre.

Holy Crap yes! I used to play in a punk band and it just got down right BORING! It was the same 3, 4, 5, chord progressions that every other punk band in the world does. (btw-nothing against punk rock, i still love listening to it from time to time, i just couldn't stand playing it anymore.)
Now that iam playing with this group of guys i find that the music just comes flowing out, the creativity is unbound.
