Rap. Do you think it's considered music?

I personally hate rap and don't consider it to be music. An uneducated idiot talking fast over a looped beat while some guy in the background yells "YEAH YEAH!" is...not...music.

Now, there ARE some exceptions to this. I don't mind as much when they MIX singing and rapping, but I still would never be caught listening to it.

It bothers me that the majority of teens in America have converted to rap and actually buy that crap.

I have a few words for them...listen to MUSIC, not cRAP.

Rap, IMO, only can be considered music when it has some singing, or, when the words have a melodic (is that a word?) sound to them. Not explaining this very well. You know, when it is almost singing but the vocals change in pitch melodically.

It doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. I don't mind the stuff that actually makes it to the mainstream. But that stuff has singing in it.

I'm sure I'll again be in the minority here but there are plenty of rap songs I like. I prefer the ones that have a singing chorus. Ryan, the blanket statement of "uneducated" sounds really bad. Of course you realize there are people who rap about politics, war, against calling women ho's and beotches etc etc. They rap about everything people sing about. There are Christian rappers too. Plenty of the producers of rap make brilliant music for the rappers. Most rappers have a melody to their rap too. Some of it is a annoying yes, but some is tasty. Some rappers use full live bands I.E. the roots - a very cool band. Having said that the bulk of commercial rap is junk. But that's the same as the bulk of all commercial music genres.

On our gig tape or cd, hell whatever our mood songs that we play between sets we have LL Cool Js Mama Said Knock You Out, I just love that song, and then we have Faith No More, the song Epic. I love that. It gets old to me, but Ive played on a couple of recordings at a friends studio that are Rap things. I just throw some wild wammy pedal guitar on there, who knows one of them may take off one day and I'll be rich and famous.

Perfect example there JW. Mama said knock you kills! And he played it with a live band on MTV's unplugged. That version slays!
I've recently recorded bass guirar and hook (aka vocals on a chorus) For a producer. I'm in the same boat with JW, you never know what will take off.

Oh great! Now you've done it. Someone is probably going to bring up screamo again as a comparison and this will only lead to "I like to beat the hell out those kids" posts again. Damn your soul Ryan!!!!!

I know this has been covered ad naseum, but I'll bite. If it has a beat it's music, regardless of whether or not you like it. It doesn't have to have harmony, or even a melody, or any other elements you might consider to be essential. You cannot deny that rap has had a major influence on music for over 20 years. Personally it's not my favorite genre, but I listen to all kinds of music, from Black Sabbath to Bach and I like to keep an open mind.

CW McCall - "Convoy" - rap

there've been many many rap songs that most of us have heard & would never have put in the genre, yet they're still "rap," i.e., talking over music &/or beats

Cake - "Mr Mastodon's Farm" / "Nugget" - rap with good licks in the background

As has been said before, ad nauseum, there's good, & there's not so good.

If screaming and carrying on like an overmedicated toddler is considered music, then I reckon Rap is music.
They both generally lack melody.

IMO No! Takes little talent to talk nasty to a beat machine.
So much for generality. I have heard some "spoken" lyrics in songs I like.

That whole CB / Trucker cult thing was SOOO lame.

I see nothing inherently wrong in using the voice as a percussive instrument, as long as you're using "real" instruments as well, rather than the sampling & computer-driven drivel.

Call it what ya wanna', but that rap at the end of the movie "Men In Black" is awesome! Ya gotta dig that ol' Fresh Prince Dude.

But it does take a lot of talent to "talk" with rhythm in a unique and memorable way. I.E. Snoop Dogg
