Last night...

So I mentioned that I was planning on going to an open mic last night...Just as I was getting ready to go, I got a call from the guy that runs it - "Phil, can you fill in for me? My wife's had to run off to the hospital. I might be there later, but I need some help..."

Of course I said "sure thing," & ran off to run the thing for the guy. My 1st time there, & of course I didn't know it would be a solo gig for 4 hours...took me 15 minutes to find the "on" switch for his board! It's a teeeny lil pencil-lead-sized button on the bottom of the back of his powered board.

Fortunately, I called Dddonnie, & he showed up to do a set, but I played for 3 1/2 solid hours!

When I was done, I went to the owner to get paid. He was drunk, & said that he'd paid "that other guy!" Dddonnie got my frikken $!!!!

Dddonnie gave it to me, of course, but damn! I guess I hadn't made much of an impression on the owner.

There were some very strange ppl there. One woman who looked like she could have me for a mid-day snack was very taken with me. Some ppl were teasing the hell outta me over her. She heard it & left. I felt bad for her, but at least I hadn't said anything to offend.

I got a lot of good comments, but my fingers are all blistered & I didn't feel as comfortable as I should have.

The owner & his wife were fighting over something, too. I didn't know it. He shut down the show about 15 minutes early, saying he had some "personal prob's" to attend to. I went to his wife & asked if they needed any help. She gave me the strangest look, like I was trying to pick her up or something. Duh!!!! I had no idea what was going on....I was just trying to concentrate on the music.

I'm gonna hafta quit trying to help ppl. It makes me look like an idiot.

No Philby you did right in helping..BUT, this being an open mic, why did you play 3.5 HRS..Maybe this place is known for this kinda trouble and musicians dont come back after the first time..Yeah , WE dont have the numurous jams like we had in the past so chances of finding out about the BAD ONES while out at others are slim nowdays..Used to be if one bad word got out about a place, good players avoided it like the plague.Yeah , just chalk it up to "one of those nites"??? :? ..When club owners show us such disrespect, its time for all to come together like we did back in the old brotherhood and boycott the EFFIN place.. ..

3.5 hours is alot of music bro.

We do 2 hour sets once in a while. But that's alot of music.

Holding a crowd, and being able to do it solo, for 3.5 hours?

Props for that brother!

I'd come to a show for sure bro, if I was ever your way.

Man you did the right thing for sure. I always offer to help when I see or feel a need arise. But you know what?
You and I, we are not responsible for other peoples being irrisponsable, or being a dick. If the drunk cant keep his ol lady happy. Hell that aint your problem.
He's an idiot. And you did what you felt was right. Screw em.
Smile big :D And move on with life. 8)

It's big of you to filll in for someone at the last minute. Personally I don't do jam sessions. I won't host one or go play at one. I end up playing the whole night just like you did. It's not worth the aggravation.
