I was looking for a job when I found this one.
My condiments exactly.
I worked for a Best Western motel here for a while, maintenance guy. 15 hours a week, minimum wage. Owner/manager wanted me to give him my cell phone number (prepaid phone) and be on call 24/7. Had a head housekeeper who got bent out of shape because I tried to get her to move her truck out of the handicapped parking area, screamed and cussed me for 10 minutes, followed me inside to do so and threatened to kill me. (said she'd cut my throat, cut my heart out) did this a second time a couple of months later, no he didn't fire her for the first one, or the second.
She's also the laziest person I've seen in ages, left bags of trash on the ground for me to pick up instead of in the dumpster where it should be, left the storage rooms a mess after he told her 6 or 8 times to clean up and organize...then one day a few weeks ago told me he was going to cut me back to one hour a day because I didn't do enough to suit him that day...I never went back. I'll never go anywhere near a best western either, the corporate headquarters refused to even call and talk to him about her screaming threats.
Fortunately nothing was ever done that suggested he was trying to find out what I do online, I wouldn't care anyway, and he knew I'd tell him exactly what I think if he did, tactfully if possible. But I never did get him to realize he had shown me no incentive to be "on call" 24/7 or even try to do my job...here's someone else who has repeatedly refused to do her job, he never cut her back to one hour a day, or her daughter, just as useless. Very unfair. My life had been threatened twice, very unsafe working environment.
I think spying on my internet activity would have gotten him a lawsuit. The only thing that stopped me as it was is the fact that I didn't have $20 coming when I walked out so I wouldn't get a lawyer to even talk to me about it...not a decent one anyway...
Employers need to realize we don't live the life they prescribe...
