How often do you play with other musicians?

Just posted something that got me thinking.
.
What's your involvement in music?
How often do you play with other musicians, either gigging or practicing?
I'm playing about 3 - 4 times a week.

3-4 times a week

There are open jams all over the area, & I know quite a few musicians here who go to them 4-5 nights a week as well as gigging 3 weekends a month. I would probably be one of them, but I'm at the mercy of the mass trasnsit system for a few months. That severely limits my play time.

Frequency

I used to play about 5 times a week when I was with Stonecircle, but its now about once or twice every two weeks since I'm in a writing phase. I have an ensemble in the works so that could change frequency again soon.

Jams - When I was learning Celtic music I played a seemingly endless bunch of "sesiuns" which were fun at first, but got a little boring when they played the same stuff all the time. Also, it was hard when I was the only harp player, and you'd get maybe a fiddle or two and 24 guitars :). outside of that, I prefer jams these days when they are made up of an unusual array of instruments. You get much more creative results.

In the last 7 days:
- I recorded 6 songs w/a bass player (to see what we sound like)
- visted another musician (& played for a 'compatiblity check,' 2hr drive).
- practiced w/bassman one more time,
.
And I've got a couple of guys coming over tomorrow.
.
So - I'm active.
Anyone else?

Jonny,
I'm glad that some of us are actually playing with others.
We've been talking for many months now - nice to know we're spreading the music, instead of just talking about it. :)
Music is meant to be heard.
- although, there's nothing wrong with talking about it, either - helps build up the motiveation.

Writing some, playing with a few people, but nothing seems to be happening as to a group... I did a show the other night, and am playing this weekend at another couple of venues, fri is kindof a jam, saturday is a single gig. I've been trying to book solo gigs while I am on the daunting task of finding paople to play with. I do have one guy interested in my idea of an acoustic oriented project. He plays didjerie, but I am looking for some good percissionists, or at least one, maybe another guitar or bass or both. I'd like to see it form into a kind of musical high for the audience and band member alike... I went down to the beach the other night where some friends were having a b-day party, and there was a guy playing harp... and another guy on guitar, a few hand drummers, and I jumped beck on the trap-set. Later the other guitar player left, gbut since I didn't have my guitar, I just sang some trancidental type vocals and we added didjerie doo. By the time we were done jamming everyone around was in a trance like state, even the other people on the beach not sitting with us. It was great. Too bad your are like a gazzillion miles away... this would probabaly be something that would be right up your alley.

I actually might be kinda close to getting some dececnt recording done, I have a friend that told me he has a digital recorder, he can't figure out, so if I can help him and between us we can figure it out, we might just have some production capacity between us.

Anyway that's about it, except getting kicked out of a cover band after less than a week before the 1st gig, then after the show, I got a call 2 days later telling me that although I was good, they don't want to have to teach me, it would take too long, so they are going back to the girl they had before(dispite the drummers problem with her drinking problem among other thing's, or so he said). Anyway I saw their schedule and they look likre they are ending it all together... their loss. Some people are just afraid of work, but what I want to know is, if that's the case, why would they choose music?

Now that I've rambled for long enough.........
What's up with you?

It's been a few weeks since our guitar player quit, so we haven't practiced as a band since then. I've been to some open jams, but I have a hard time finding songs that the other players know. I'm really wanting to get the band together & PLAY!!! I think if I had the choice between singing & sex right now I'd say screw the sex & sing my ass off. Oh, wait; that's the choice I'd make anyway...

Alan: good music with good people....can it get much better?

Bluesguitargrl,
Hey, it almost sounds like you're making a living with music.
(Or - making a name for yourself, anyway) :)
-
That trance-like state shows success, huh? You made an impression on other people, and - isn't that what music is supposed to be about?.
.
Re: gaining/losing a new band - sounds like too much head-butting. Maybe if they do end it, you can snag one of them to play with you, huh?
.
And me?
I've been practicing, trying to improve myself. Jammed w/ a couple guys last night - going to do mostly my originals.
They have a ways to go to play out, because my songs are a little harder to learn.
But the songs don't sound busy at all, they flow nicely . . .
And when they DO learn one if my songs - ahhh, man, it sounds GREAT!
Worth every extra munute it takes to learn them.
I also do have a few songs with a regular 'difficulty- level,' but they're not as fun for me to play, so I don't write many like that.
So that's my story for this week. :)
Alan

Jonnyrocker,
You say, "good music with good people."
Well, yeah that pretty much covers a real lot of it, huh?
.
Maybe we should ask Julie if it can get any better? She mentioned a choice between singing & sex.
.
But, then again, - seeing as I'm a rhythm-man, I guess if I had to choose betwen singing or sex, my choice would be obvious. :)
.
So, Julie - want to jump in and yell at me? :)
Alan.
