I have no idea how many times I've seen this in 10 years of repairing computers...I always had to keep a few modems in stock when I had a shop, every storm that rolled through would wipe out at least a half dozen.

You can minimize the risk with a little knowledge and preparation. Lightning hits phone lines a lot more often than power lines, 90% of the time when I saw lightning damage all it wiped out was the modem. Occasionally one will take a bad hit and it will fry motherboard, video card, hard drive and/or power supply, but usually just the modem.

Get a surge protector. Not a $10 el cheapo, a good one, minimum 700 jules. It'll cost yoou around $50 but it's worth it. Make sure it has plugs for the phone line. (DSL runs through phone lines too, broadband is not exempt.)

Any time a storm comes in, unplug the phone lines at the wall plug. It's a good idea to shut the computer down and unplug the surge protector, lightning can't damage anything that's not plugged in. And it will hit power lines, I've also seen occasions someone lost TV, VCR, DVD, stereo, computer, you name it. Most often though, it's just the modem. If you leave the phone lines plugged in, chances are the surge protector will stop it, but why take chances?

Keep current backups, at least you did have that one covered, most people don't. I use a usb drive, soon as I record anything it goes on a usb drive and is backed up on another computer, then CD. If anything happens, it's still available. On the USB drive I can also carry it in my pocket if I want to play it for anyone.

I'm building a computer for recording now, this is one of the reasons it won't have an internet connection at all, that and Windows is such a security risk online. I don't like to put win2000 online, and absolutely refuse to put XP online, in fact I don't even like to have XP in the same room with me...I'm running ME on this machine (laptop), but only because it's too slow to handle Linux well. I've tried Mandrake 9.2, it runs quite stable but it's slow. So I keep ME and try to be extra careful online.

Get a good surge protector or battery backup (UPS). Make sure it has phone plugs, if you're home when bad weather rolls in, unplug it. If you're gone, maybe it will do the trick. I'm next door in Louisiana, we got that weather just before you did, it got plenty bad here. I've seen several trees down and lots of big limbs, a good friend got a huge limb through her storage trailer.

Lotsa luck....hope this helped...

Surge protectors are a no-brainer, but a direct strike will destroy any protector and everything thats plugged into. Just saying... Get one, use it, replace it every 5 years (they do "wear out"), but also have a backup of EVERYTHING, and have the backup offsite so that in case of other disasters like fire and flood, you may lose all your hardware, but at least your intellectual property is intact.

I use an internet file storage site for mine.

Hey Gang,

Just a quick question to Kramer while we're on the subject..I heard a radio ad for one of those sites that keeps all your data..Think it was like 39 or 59 $ a yr with unlimited storage..Just wonderin if you use a service like that?

Sorry, I couldn't even read through your post...Try using a comma or a period every once and a while, and maybe I might have an idea what I'm reading.

I've been using a free service called box.net. It's okay, and offers premium services for annual fee, of course. I'd look up some ratings on them and see who offers what. The free thing works for me, I'm not sure of the limit, but I haven't hit it yet lol. I know one of the limitations is that it wont let me upload anything over 10mb per file, so far I haven't hit anything that big.

Do you know how to write English with proper punctuation and proper grammar? It actually does make it easier to read your posts or whatever you're trying to communicate. For some people it's the "cool" thing to ignore all the rules of correct writing. It shows how rebellious you are. Calling somebody who can't understand your post a word nazi shows how "hip" you are. Actually it tells me that either you CAN'T write properly or that you are trying to be "hip." Either way it's a shame that some people won't read your posts because they can't understand them. I would like to think that you would WANT everyone to understand your posts. This way you may get the maximum benefit from your message. Later...

I'm sorry I bothered to reply now, this guy is probably sitting there calling me an idiot too because I tried to help...Should have known not to waste my time.

Look, brainless...these guys had a very accurate and valid point. I ignored the total lack of punctuation, I thought maybe you would appreciate some information concerning your problem. Nobody was rude to you, and you come back calling them rude names because they point out that you could make things easier on everyone if you would bother to add a comma or period now and then. They were right, it does help make your post much more legible and easier to understand.

Go tell your mommy your computer is fried, she let you grow up an idiot, maybe she can fix it. Why do you think your teachers tried to get you to learn decent spelling and grammar in school? Because they wanted to waste their time listening to themselves talk? NO...because it makes your communications much more legible and comprehensible. (Do you even know what those words mean? I'm sure you can't spell them...) Your parents and everyone else in this country PAID for your education so you would be able to sit in front of that computer and insult people...how deplorable. All that money wasted on your empty head and all you can do is act stupid. I want my money back!

If you were too lazy to learn in school it's not our fault or our problem, but if you post something here that's difficult to understand, it will be pointed out. You claim to be a songwriter, (you did say 'your music') how do you expect anyone to understand or follow your lyrics if they have trouble even reading them??? Why do you expect us to take you seriously as an intelligent musician if you start out by acting like an illiterate jerk? Do you even know what illiterate means?

I'm going to see if I can delete my first post, you obviously didn't appreciate a thing any of us tried to suggest, we try to help you and you come back snarling...thanks a lot...I hope your computer grows teeth...

See ya...wouldn't wanna be ya'...
