I'm so glad...

I'm so glad it's over. There we were at the "fair" & the 1st act went up. It was some modern neo-punk 3-piece that ran the gamut for onstage errors.

The guitar player unplugged himself 3 times, & was still too clueless to thread his cord through his guitar strap. The drummer lost his time completely in 3 songs & simply stopped until he could find the beat & start back up. Their vocals were grossly horrid, but I suppose that that's what they were going for. The bass guy was pretty good, for a beginner that just played the roots for the most part, but he never stopped & always stayed on beat. He held the band together like a good bassist should. I still love that youthful energy, though.

Of course since this was the 1st night, the audience consisted of the 1st act's parents & gf's for the most part. Well, the STICKMASTERS showed up to support me, & that was nice.

Then it was our turn. I lost the thing in the 1st song at one point - brain fart - it was in Breathe. I only lost one note, but it was a huge mistake. I laughed it off & kept going, of course (played F# instead of E - EW!!!!) The rest of the set was seamless, for me. Guitarist/flat singer guy lost it on about 4 songs, but me & Blinky, the drummer who looks like a short skinny cross between Sideshow Bob & Buddy Holly, kept him from wandering too far. It wasn't all that bad, really, but I'm glad the pressure is off. This was nice, in truth. I didn't hafta take an amp, even. Just took my axe & a song list & my lil cheat sheet. I sang it okay in spite of my fears, too. I really like that drummer. He kept the energy in that dreaded Jap song prefectly.

Funny thing is, the opening act for tomorrow called & cancelled, so they asked me to open as a solo tomorrow in the heat of the day. Wheee! Hey, it's money for nothin' as far as I can tell. It ain't like I've practiced or anything. I'll just go in with my acoustic & play & sing for 40 min or so & walk out with $150 in my pocket. Not bad for an old guy, huh? Well, I'm sure it'll wash me out. Solo gigs always do, no matter how short or long they are. I seem to put a helluva lot of effort into those things.

Now if I could only get that damned Turning Japanese out of my headbone! We just HAD to close with that, didn't we?

Next up is the twiddly guitar player & his friend, who's pretty good. Then next weekend I got that solo. Then I'm gonna try to swipe that guitar player from the band that I auditioned for last week, & get him into the Flamingo Road Band.

Damn I'm having fun!

The 5th of this month is my 25th anniversary with the old lady, so I'm gonna try to do something nice for her this weekend...maybe even take out the trash.

Next weekend the STICKS are gonna camp out at the drummer's pond & fish all night. Boy I'm looking forward to that trip.

Gee...I'm likin' life right now.

Hope all's well with you-uns.

hahahaha.. those story threads are awesome, but I get kinda confused with all the stories. Are these the new guys that sent you the long list of songs you never played before? And a flat singer is not a good thing.. but it happens once in a while, I guess.
Stay in the happy mood, man :D

The guitarist I wanna steal is from the guys that sent me the song list, & I'm not going back to re-audition for.

The flat singer guy has been after me for years to work with him. I've done it before, & he's not really that horrible, but it's just a way I refer to him. He has tone & pitch issues, frequently, yeah, but he's a great guy & very funny. His guitar work is ok, & he chooses interesting material.

Hey John - "twiddly" LOL...that's when you get one of those jazzy players that just keeps playing note after note after note that doesn't really go anywhere. You've surely seen the guys who can't stop playing even when they have no frikken clue what to do with a song? TWIDDLY! They often slide out of key, but that rarely stops them once they get going, cuz they're just twiddlin' around, not being serious enough to work out a real lick for the tune...they usually don't have a lot of volume or energy or creativity, but they'll keep pluggin' away just hoping that they'll hit something good on a song...seems that jazz-wannabe guys are the worst for this, in my experience

Definitely lemme know if & when you get into my area, John. I'd love to catch your playing.

Had a good weekend with the wife. Bob, you'll be glad to know that I took her fishing, cuz we're basically too broke to do anything really special that costs a lot. We had a good time.

She went to my gig yesterday, & tried & tried to cue me to sing stuff that I used to do. She held up 6 fingers, then 4, over & over. It wasn't until I was done that I figured out she was telling me to play the Beatles' "When I'm 64!" Hell...it's beem about 8 yrs since I played that song, & I don't think I coulda pulled it outta my headbone anyway. I started at one point to play Paul Simon's "Duncan," but had to change it to something else when I remembered the 1st line of the song - "The couple in the next room's about to win a prize. They've been going at it all night long..."

Sheesh! One of these days I'll work up am actual rated song list. "G" for fairs & such, "PG" for festivals & "R" for bars. I still managed to sing 2 songs with "whores" in 'em, for crying out loud.

LOL...I used to call myself "the bad boy of folk" cuzza this sorta thing. Funny thing is, it caught on & I've had ppl introduce me that way. Boy, that sounds dumb, doesn't it?
