audition them from the comfort of a full bar.
I host a punkaoke show in Alameda. We have people come through and belt out classic punk/80s/glam tunes with a lot of ummm "unusual" stage antics, mannequins, people playing back-up on pints, etc.
I can tell you female/male whatevva, there's some awesome front people (who can actually sing AND perform) doing songs by Blondie, Queen, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, and lots of others.
The venue's pretty roomy, with cheap drinks, food, and an outdoor section.
