I hear that! I won't even drink a beer nowadays! My only vice is cigs.... Have this thing about always being aware of my surroundings and never letting my guard down... I honestly don't know how I survived the 80's without at least some sort of physical or mental damage.

Yeah, here, too.
Sure I feel better, but I'm also more inclined to experiment with a song, and make it worse instead of better.
I've gotten used to drinking coffee before playing. I don't recommend others do it, though, unless they're used to it.
.
Hey, also, a piece of advice for those who might not have thought about it:
Don't eat a big meal before playing. You'll get torpid, and your audience will hear it.
You can either have a full mind, or a full stomach, but not both.

I do not drink, so that whole thing excludes me. Once in a while I like some coffee, but I would not want to drink it before going on stage, especially since it makes my stomach upset sometimes.

But as for the big meal, thanks for stating that. I do not know if that would have clicked someday when I go to play on stage. Now I will keep that in mind.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

Been averaging 50-75 gigs a year for the past 10 years or so, prior to that was full time professional touring for around 25 years with maybe 3 weeks off per year. Sometimes playing 5-6 evenings per week, sometimes 2 or 3.

I'm kicking off 2008 with a killer gig in a beautiful resort and I'm looking foward to a great year. It's looking like this ole fart may be going back to the level of gigging I did in the past. I've got an air tight group and the phone is ringing. It's not about age, it's the music and the performance.

You folks get out there and do it! The gigs are there and so are the players. Never give up on finding them. They could be your next door neighbor!! I wish you all the best of luck in the coming year

Keep it a little bluesy!! Ha!

This especially goes for singers. A full stomach puts pressure on, and constricts the diaphragm, which is where vocal power comes from.

But don't go onstage hungry either, eat about 1 1/2 hours before you play. You won't be hungry and your system will have time to mostly deal with it.

Bodine:

Glad to hear from another ole fart, I can't find anyone serious around here except for one bass player who's now trying his luck in Nashville, been thinking about checking out some of the possibilities in other places like the Baton Rouge/New Orleans area and Mississippi too, but probably not as far south as Gulfport, that's a bit of a drive, but I guess if it was worthwhile I'd make the trip...Maybe Jackson or Vicksburg, 2 hours or so from me. Supposed to go do some recording in Tupelo after the 1st sometime too, that should be interesting, never been there.

Have they rebuilt the place yet? I know the main reason I haven't tried BR/NO is they have very little housing yet and what is available is incredibly expensive. My sister tried to go to work down there and couldn't find a place to park a travel trailer, the one place that did have a 2 day space was around $150 for a weekend, most of them $450 a month or better for just a travel trailer...It's more like $300 or less most other places.

Anyway, keep it up, crank it up and honk if you drive by here. :D

And pleeeeeze.. whatever you do... do not let your roadies let you take a hit of what you thought was just herb off their pipe before running on stage! One of the scariest gigs of my life! Suffice to say, that particular roadie was unemployed and unhappy for quite a while! :P

Hey Paleo
The coast is coming back strong, but you are correct in saying that it is expensive down here. Housing has skyrocketed. The casinos are back and going full swing with more being built. Since Katrina took out most of the poor folks down here, it is quickly becoming a total resort area with condos, etc.

That is a good thing for musicians cause they pay good if you don't mind playing odd hours and being flexible with your song list.

As far as the club scene down here, it's not recovered too well. There are a few decent venues, but the casinos rule.

Jackson is a great music town. Plenty of players and some great clubs. There are no casinos, so the club scene thrives up there. You can hear some of the best r&b players in the business in some of the funky little clubs up there. You just have to go over there and try to catch some open mike nites and let em know what you can do. You could find your phone ringing off the hook!!

I never played much around Vicksburg so I don't know the scene up there.

Anyway good luck and Happy New Year to ya. If you ever make it down my way hollar at me.

keep it a little bluesy

Thanks for the info, I've been wondering what's happening in some of the places not too far to get to without a major road trip. The coast wouldn't bother me if I had an idea it would be doable, but with housing the cost it sounds like, I've been really wary of it. New Orleans is where I'd really like to try, but housing there is out of sight...and still very limited.

The only thing I know about Vicksburg is one casino a friend and I went to about 3 years ago, they had a band set up but not playing that night so we didin't see them. (Tuesday night). Didn't go anywhere else, but did tour the battleground, that was pretty cool. You never really understand just what they were shooting at each other until you stand next to a canon 8 feet long with a barrel you can drop a soccer ball into...most of them are a lot smaller, softball size or so, 3-4 feet long...still pretty scary...

Don't eat fast food before a big performance. It results in gaseous explosions at both ends.

Thank the Gods that mics aren't usually placed down there.

damn..i cant remember last week nevermind how many gigs ive done but based on playing over sixteenish years with the heavest touring done in the last 7 years..anything from 95-98 is a blur due to the amount of class a drugs i managed to devour while gigin, sometimes it helped me perform and sometimes it just plain didnt, so its alot of gigs but i couldnt even guess at a number :? .

Somewhere between 2500 and 3K. It was interesting to try and figure out.

Thanks :)

I cant even burn before practice I tend to listen too closely at what I'm playing, start trying to change things and forget the change in the song and screw it all up.. lol

I could drink a beer and losen up though but 1 too many would also be detrimental.

Back in the day though..... Incriminating stories for sure.
