Hate to admit it but there were tons of pharmaceuticals imbibed throughout that time in my life
Hehe...never was much into pharmaceuticals, although a bit of something to stay awake has been known to happen from time to time. You won't find many things I haven't at least tried, some of them I liked quite well. My main thing was that greenish-brown herbal blend rolled into those little white cylindrical objects we'd always pass around before a show, I don't think anybody ever saw me play straight until about 10 years ago when it started to have a detrimental affect on my concentration and I would make too many mistakes, so I quit...at least while playing, now it's play now party later.
In earlier years, late 60's to mid 70's all I can say is boy howdy! Sometimes I'm surprised I lived through it and remained halfway sane...Forget the little yellow pill, we had a tiny purple one - the same one Jimi Hendrix wrote a song about - and one called orange sunshine, there were other colors too...then there were the mushrooms, organic and much more friendly...white powders...all sorts of interesting substances. It was a very uncommon night the whole band didn't imbibe some sort of concoction, then there would be the songs that turned into 15 minute jam sessions...on occasion we would just tell the drummer or bass player to give us a beat and we'd run with it. Sometimes we'd wish we could have gotten it on tape, sometimes we'd hope nobody was paying much attention...
Fortunately I have better sense these days, I refuse to even drink a beer before I go onstage, once or twice a year on a really bad night I'll have one later on in the show, sometimes it helps me loosen up a bit and I won't play so bad, sometimes it makes no difference at all, it still sucks...but I'm glad those days are just memories now...I probably wouldn't be here if I'd kept it up...
