Good mic and preamp

Hey all,

I'm planning to do a little upgrade of my system and I wanted to get some advice on a good but affordable (condenser) mic for vocals, and possibly a good replacement firewire pre-amp. I record everything straight through the pre-amp to the computer. No PA, no guitar amp.

What I have works, but i get a alot of hiss in my recordings.

I have $500-$750 to spend total, and I can't imagine spending more than $250 on a mic. Can someone point me to something good?

Thanks!

I picked up a Shure KSM 27 condensor for $216 shippped. It is a killer mic. I researched for quite some time and settled on the KSM 27 and I couldn't be happier.

I picked it up at: http://www.boyntonproaudio.com/

as an open box with full warranty etc. and I could not be happier. The guy I talked to on the phone was really knowledgable and helpufl.

I am sorry I didn't buy the other one they had so I had a stereo pair.

Thanks for the tip Wegman. That mic looks perfect.

A pre-amp should make a big effect on hiss as well right? Any ideas?

I have a Mackie 24x8 console and that mic plugged in to the board (no pre-amp other then the board) is dead silent.
