Is it a age old music question? Or a topic discussed by a few in private?

5 or 6 years ago I had 8 or 9 songs on my player, and at least 4 or 5 videos
of bands. (Probably why I was playing out a lot then)

Now the current requirement on this forum seems to be music put up

So I've put one song up on my bm player, under it's original title.

I acknowledge that Yod is the better judge of peoples musicianship.

So I've decided to change the title of my song on my bm player too

Drumroll please

I dunno. Whose? Why did you take down the old songs and videos? While you don't have to put any music up, you shouldn't be surprised if people on a music forum are going to judge you by your music. (or lack thereof) Whether or not Yod's assessment is accurate, the only true measure of your musicianship is heads at your show.

I don't know if you intended it or if something went wrong but your song seemed kinda hacked off at the beginning and the end.

I've been thinking about putting up a file share so we can do a idiot fusion (idiot-core?) mashup of people here. For fun, of course. It would be good for some hilarity.

You're right Mord it is cutoff at beginning and end, highlighting my lack of skills with a
drum machine and a recording device.

I took all the music down cause I'm done playing in bands, and am happy with that.

The true measure of musicianship has been hotly debated on this forum. We all have our opinions.

i've posted my thoughts before on the whole "who's better" debates, cutting contests, and music competitions....but since i've never been shy about repeating myself, i see no reason to change stripes now.

music isn't a competition as i see it. it's not a competitive sport, nor something that can measured. this is why i was amused and not interested in engaging in a "bass battle" with glen when he challenged me to one to see who was "better".

at a certain point, once musicians reach a certain level of competence it's simply a matter of personal taste as to who we prefer to listen to.

I feel the same way as you..it was sarcasm.although I do love to watch Cuttin heads contests on youtube.

And the OP might have had a cutting heads idea in mind since the title of thread suggests it?

true, to a degree.

I can remember several people here freaking out because I said I could reproduce a particular sitar part with a couple weeks time to learn and practice it. Then there was another sitar performance by a young player that was so fast, I admitted to never being able to reproduce that.

So there are some skills that are unique to a player that sets them apart, and they are therefore "better" at that skill.

few would argue that SRV played better Texas, and Chicago style blues than George Benson...and few would argue that Benson isn't the superior jazz gtrst.

but i was speaking in more general terms...for example who of the two above is the "better gtrst"? now you're into subjective territory.

and you still have that very same subjectivity even when you're talking about the exact same and specific skill....like who is the "better" blues gtrst....SRV or Albert King? how about who's the "better" jazz gtrst...Benson or Kenny Burrell?

actually, cutting contests go way back before blues gtr duels. ragtime piano players were dueling one another back in the 1890's.

Whose best? Well I know it's heresy for a southerner to say this, but I never did care for Duane Allman. That in no way implies I don't think he was a great player, just didn't work for me.

Some of the folks I like a lot may not appeal to others. But as musicians we should be able to separate our tastes from our perceptions of musical skill.

Stevie Ray couldn't play jazz; Pat Metheney can be judged to be a "better" jazz guitarist by virtue of ability and knowledge and skill.

Stevie showed more passion, and spent time hanging out with David Bowie so he shot like an arrow across the sky to greatness, but Methaney's longevity of greatness is as great an achievement whether anyone knows who he is in the pop world.

on the other hand, one could say Eddie Van Halen is a better guitarist than Scotty Moore was quite objectively, yet there was none better at the time for what Elvis was doing. I don't think it's fair to judge anyone by what came after.

Generally speaking, I agree with your premise. Once an artist has emerged to a certain plateau, it's more a matter of what they do with it from that point on. Yet there are objective markers that can judge ability and skill....which don't matter a whit to the average listener.

Thank God for that or we'd all be varying degrees of bluegrass.

Was more into English blues-rock.
