The Marshal I use for Guitar and G-Dec prac amp don't look like packing crates.

My bass amp on the other hand, looks like packing crates! :)

I could throw it off the roof of a house, both cabs and the head, one at a time. And when I got down off the roof they'd be stacked up and ready to go. SWR Working Man lives up to it's name <sigh> But yeah, it looks like packing crates...

The standard tolex-covered amp looks really haven't changed in 50+ years. Why not? Because what works, works. Reinforced corners (many amps have changed from metal to plastic) and a covering that can take some abuse. Black tolex can, and if gets marked up, a can of flat black spray paint fixes it right up!

Yeah, that open Bugera head style (and there are some by H&K and others, too) are 'industrial' to say the least. Some people like that you can see the valves glowing inside.

The wood cabinet design (Fender Acoustisonic, that old Epi)? Nice for a home studio, or even in your living room, but I would not want to be gigging with one - only a matter of time before the wood doesn't look so nice, with gouges and marks on it.

Guitars are where the marketing folks cluster which for one thing but they also manufacture guitars appropriate to genre. You can run your Tele through a Marshal Amp and your Jackson too. Bass players often use good ole SVT regardless of genre.

But guitarists have to have a cool looking guitar appropriate to your station. I'm not complaining though, I like Fender and Jackson.

I don't disagree - the amp should look good, but the amp is typically in the back of the stage, not even visible to most people who are watching the band. "Basic black' disappears into the background.

this matching this to that is baloney.. was it not the Cars who would wear a suit and tie with tennis shoes sneakers? why not patent leather Italian shoes to match then?.. that distressed SRV guitar would go good with a Stetson beaver fur hat too.. think you are making way too much out of it..

George, when you joined up here you sought advice and acquired a Vox Valvetronix, correct?

george, in the real estate world, I would agree with you about matching neighborhoods to quality of the house ..I would never build a mansion in Roxbury and would not construct a hovel in Beverly Hills..
