I was protecting a record producer back in the eighties...Since I don't discuss my clients personal data let me just say that he had been producing Glen Campbell. They'd had a falling out over issues I won't go into.

Suffice to say the things he told me about Glen Campbell made me respect the man as I would a brother.

I used to watch the Glen Campbell Show on tv, even though I didn't like country music, I could appreciate good musicianship.
Didn't know anything about the Wrecking Crew until a few years ago. GC played on over 500 songs at that time, and subbed on guitar and vocals for the Beach Boys when Brian Wilson dropped out for a while. Wilson said that GC had a better voice and range than anyone in the group.

Sad to hear this news, but glad that Glen has finally gotten his promotion.

Did anyone see the time he "battled" live onstage with George Benson? That was the first time I realized just how good he was.

Glen and his wife had a small home fellowship in their Arizona home and had become "messianic" believers. Glen Campbell worked on a project with a friend of mine in our little micro-genre of praise music, and he was negotiating with the same label I was on until he had that DWI where he sneered at the camera in 2007 or 2008, I think? That was the first sign that the problem was more than drinking.

I was so looking forward to meeting him someday but it never happened. Now I'll have to wait a little longer.

Like everyone else here, I was ignorant of how good he really was on the guitar (and banjo). I didn't much care for his 60s show (but loved Johnny Cash's--he once had Derek & the Dominoes on), although I did have some interest in how country music was evolving at the time (and did eventually play in a country-rock band). Glen's show was a bit too 'pop-ish' for my tastes, and since shows like that generally targeted a family audience, he never really broke free on the guitar. Who knew?

But in the 70s I saw him do a duet w/ Roy Clark, and was well aware of just how good Roy Clark was; he carried Hee-Haw, musically (go ahead and admit it: you liked Hee-Haw), and was a great picker on a level w/ Chet Atkins--perhaps the greatest country picker of all time. Seeing them together--I think it was around '78 or so--I was amazed to see just how good Campbell was. It wasn't until later that I read about the WC and Glen's studio work, but after watching him go at it w/ Roy Clark, I wasn't surprised to learn he had been in such high demand as a studio musician. A great talent.

roy was very talented,I seem to remember that chet said he was the best he ever taught, and yes I liked heehaw , but it wasnt like I had too many choices,you only had 5 channels and it was them or lawrence welk and I was dads remote and sometimes antenna,( here hold this coat hanger boy )

I cannot listen to 'Hurt.' It was the music at my late brother's funeral. Johnny Cash did a wonderful job but I can't hear it without wanting to fall apart. He did a wonderful job, there is no denying it.

With Waylon, Johnny, and now Glen Campbell gone, I have a lot of difficulty even tuning in a country station. I'm a metal head but I love good country. I'm just not hearing it any more...
