Discipline and preparation

When I saw this originally it reminded me that discipline and preparedness really matter. I still think of it - I always keep at least six of my songs ready to go and have biz cards on me and a couple of my books in the back of the car, just in case!

A music producer was giving a speech about how to make in the biz. A guy raised his hand and said, "Isn't it all about who you know?"

The producer replied, "Sometimes...but you must always be prepared when a chance presents itself. Do you have a CD of your work on you?"

"Uh...no..."

Yup. Business cards in the wallet, CDs out in the truck. Someone hands you a guitar and says 'play a couple of your songs', be ready to do just that!

Songwriters should take it a step further.

It takes a LOT of discipline to create something when there is no guarantee it will ever pay off. But without that hard work of preparation, one will always be chasing after trends instead of creating them.
