Yep, it's synth pop week. Now, I assume most of you already know very well what synth pop is, but in case you don't I'll just say that it originated in the late 70s and became very popular during the 80s and has been popular now and then since. Let's not complicate things - it's pop music where synthesizers are an essential part of the sound.

Most of us have perhaps an ambivalent relationship with synth-pop because the many slightly embarassing and outdated hits and synth-pop anthems from the 80s are still relatively fresh in memory. This week is the time to come clean with your love!

Since I'm from Norway, I have to use this opportunity to pay a little homage to our own synth pop heroes from A-Ha. "Take on Me" is one of the most popular pop song exports we've ever had.

So now I've shown you mine. Show me yours!

I watched the vid. I haven't had those problems but I use Willkinson Vibratos. They have a rubber ring at the top of the vibrato that tightens pressure with an allan screw. When I had the 6 screw factory model Fender tailpiece as in the video, I pulled out the 4 middle screws that kept it from returning properly and replaced the outer two screws with case hardened screws. I put the screws into a drill and used a file to cut a slight groove in them so there wouldn't be any vertical slipping of the knife edge.

Thanks for posting that. I saw a bunch of links next to it that I might also check out. Going from win 98SE to a win 7 laptop is quite a learning transition for me. I don't really like the laptop keyboard much. Win 7 navigates better than my XP but even that is a far cry from win 98SE when on line.

Was watching a new series they have on PBS--I think it's called SoundBreak or something like that--and last night, the 2 segments were about the electric guitar (w/ significant focus on Charlie Christian's contribution, which really started it all) and...the synth. Yeah, yeah, lookit all the great things it can do! Roll over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news!

I still say 'nyet.' It worked well for Stevie Wonder, but Stevie could play tin cans and still create great music. Likewise Level42, but they had the good sense to keep 'em subdued in the mix. The best line in the show was where someone pointed out you didn't need musical talent--or even ability--to be a synth player; all it took was a desire to play around w/ goofy sounds no one had ever heard (and shouldn't). A guy once told me synth-powered pop was responsible for the crack epidemic of the 80s. I think it accounted for why blues was so popular back then--not that it needed any help.
