Doc, our midwest snowbird saxman has returned back to MO for his annual respite from the WI cold winter and will be joining us on a gig tonight!

We played 3 pc gigs this wk, Tues thru Thur, and tonight we're back to being a quartet. He's really a great player with big brawny old school tone on all horns from soprano down to Bari (his main horn)...killer clarinetist too.

And his intonation is always spot on!

My role changes up w him in the picture. I don't get to play all the "heads" in the quartet, and of course it's one more person to share solo space with, but i like the comping and counterpoint opportunities it presents.

Yeah...Off of the "Upfront album!I love the way he does that song, but no....we don't do that one. (ok, that gets you a pass for being a Yawni fan)

We do play Sanborn's version of "Coming Home Baby" but that's a tune we dress up in a bunch of different clothes whenever we play it. We'll often play it w a straight ahead swing feel, and last night we were in more of a rock and fusion mode to address the demographic of the audience, so i had the distortion kicked up and was milking the feedback on my hollowbody when we played it. Big fun.

awhile back we used to "Snakes" and "Full House" off of that same "Full House" album. thanks for reminding me of that album....gonna have to pull it out and listen to it on the way to the gig!

likely i'm just reflecting on what kind of the food the gourmet chef at that place was gonna stir up for the band when we finished. we had a steady Wednesday gig there for awhile, and the chow that she whipped up for us was one of the highlights for sure.
