as in tools of the trade.....not the tools who were on stage last night!

pics from last night's gig w P-JAZZ. the venue had just put up gtr hangers which is great because their stage is the size of postage stamp. there's one or two other places around here that have done that. i wish all venues did this.

Mark you are having too much fun. I'm very jealous at this point.

I got an email from my band today describing the weekend's activities and reminding me to get well soon. I'm on leave for health reasons, had to quit the other band. I'm glad they like me enough to not replace me but I guess bass players are always thin on the ground... 8)

Damn I'm ready to jump back on it.

Sure. Get away from a 'straight' bossa nova and play it over a loose 3>2 clave, NOLA marching band style. Slur the melody line like it's falling off a cliff. Want me to record it for ya?? I can deconstruct almost anything. 8)
Supposed to be raining tomorrow. I'll record it and post it for my audition.

90w = gear lube = greasy

yeah, right gear lube. that stuff is more than TWICE as good as WD40

jook, i'm well known in these parts for my deconstruction of tunes. (though "demolition" might be more accurate).

my first go to move is almost always reggae-fying things. a close second is putting a Nawlins second line feel to tunes. then there's always time misalignment.....playing 4/4 tunes in 6/8 and vice versa.

there's a few "straight" tunes that PJAZZ has given the NO treatment to w varying results...."Moonlight In VT", "Out Of Nowhere", Tranes "Equinox" and one that i think works really well w that feel ...."Blue Monk"

"Blue Monk" in our other trio lineup of sax/drums/bass:

you definitely should record that NO version of "...Ipanema" and perhaps retitle it "Girl With Etouffe Sauce"....i'd love to hear it!

While I can't touch his finesse, I think I can get close. It's really not much different than the bossa nova clave of Getz, just looser and more open.

more open and looser??? saaaaaay WHUT???

i gotta disagree w you there, Holmes. listen to how very light the drum feel/vibe is on the getz version.

Now, that feel that SM is laying down...it's cool enough, but man.... w that kick drum, cowbell, and the snare stuff going on? i don't know....it's definitely got a lot more heft and weight to it to my ears. Not what i would call lighter.

That's the thing about bossa nova....it's very light.

BTW, i used to play w a lounge lizard pianist who always announced the tune as "Girl With Emphysema".....yeah, THAT never got old!

ok. that's pretty out there. sounds like a bunch of N.O. guys got together w some brazilians...and they had way too much to drink and are falling down the stairs leaving the bar w instruments in hand!

some advice....don't include this on your demo for securing gigs!!

nicely done. 8)
