Once upon a time, the mere act of strapping on an electric guitar and cranking up an amplifier marked one as an outsider, a rebellious badass who refused to live by the laws of a "decent" society.

But today's cookie-cutter rockers and forgettable pop janglers make studying for the priesthood seem like an edgier pursuit than playing guitar in a band.

Guitar World thought it might be instructive to salute some genuine rock weirdos—25 individuals whose unique personalities and/or playing styles have been dictated not by popular trends, market research firms or knit-capped A&R guys, but by an all-consuming need to express themselves to the fullest. Some have crashed and burned, especially when LSD was involved, and you probably wouldn't want to invite most them to dinner.

But they're all colorful characters whose flying freak flags have contributed much to rock's rich tapestry.

Comments?

Used to see Roky Ericson band but never knew his history or background....hmmm. And I always wondered what happened to Peter Green. Maybe the Jukester should make this list? Who didn't make this list that should have?

I have to admit I recognized only about half the names. It all comes down to whose idea of 'weird' is being used.
Weird as in different? Wird as in F8cked up, mentally diseased, etc.

Frank Zappa not on the list? useless list, IMO

Is Guitar World in a tab war with Ultimate Guitar? Do they have to stoop to click bait tactics to compete with a site that gives away the goods for free?

Reminds me of the ESPN Radio host who complained about how Twitter was ruining the integrity of their business....this, after a decade of running to the air with any nugget that popped out of the dumb social network

Ultimate Guitar is my 'go-to' site for chords for songs w/ the band. I like the features like the transpose feature. Great when you're working w/ a singer. Hard to beat for free.

Yeah, me too. ABout half the time, though, I open a tab and see wrong chords, or comments like 'this is my first tab hope you like it' Just don't go to their user forums - fair bunch of crackheads there.

I'm of the opinion that anyone who is a full-time musician has mental issues, so I still don't understand why you (jookey man) got upset about this article. I don't think it has to be seen as a list of "the most retarded guitarists" to say that they were weird.

We have a saying here of "Keep Austin weird" that sort of encompasses the entire State of Texas. Weird is good, here in the promised land of Rock. And I tend to see most of the mental illness of these guitarists in terms of drug usage, so it's not actually about a person's natural state anyway.

BTW- this stuff is 100% improvised. I guess it takes crazy people to be able to do this.

This one is '100% Austin approved' beef.

I didn't think Texans claimed Austin. At least, I was told this by more than one Texan.
