Damn, jook! now how did you i was gonna say YOU!
Planet Jazz was interviewed a cpl days ago on a gig by this guy for his jazz program on KBIA. he had a lot of good questions and one of 'em was asking us about our influences. now this is going to edited down to SIX MINUTES!
i nicely explained that it'd likely take the three of us an hour to start listing our influences!
if i had to name one (ONYL ONE????) musician who had the biggest influence on....i'd have to say Cal Tjader. my dad brought home the album "Soul Sauce" (small band afro cuban) in '64 when i was eight and then "Soul Bird" (small brand Brazilian) a yr later.
not long after that dad bought a Jenco vibraphone from a neighbor.
those albums...both w great liner notes talking about the players, instrumentation, and what's going on in the songs were/are a big part of my musical DNA.
Cal wasn't the best "technical" vibist to come out of the blocks but the man had a lot of SOUL and beautiful tone. his music has always spoke to me.
he was beloved by his sidemen and i read somewhere (don't know if it's true) that he was the first jazz guy to have the backing musicians listed on his albums (at his insistence)
