have you ever noticed you never see any squirrels at night? they must have a certain curfew. this attempts to answer the questions of when that might be, and what might the penalty be for breaking curfew.

If they ever get in your attic, you'll hear them at night!

Cool song. What is that "quote" as you call it, Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)?

I'll answer your question about squirrels but first answer me this: I've tested volume levels from my own equipment to see how loud i can play at my house without bother neighbors.

Very loud if i wanted. Louder than I need.

But the question remains: if my Marshal amp on 5 can't be heard outside my house, why is it that i can hear the birds singing ?

As to squirrels? They become invisible at night. I thought everyone knew that.

thanks, it's one of mine that's been around for a little while. not sure what quote you're referring to.

this was recorded on a gig a cpl of days ago at a place that refuses to pay BMI/ASCAP shakedown money to have live music at their place. so it was all originals for us and i was try not to quote anything....man that was DIFFICULT!

"Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)??? huh......are you reffering to the Zep tune? i don't THINK i consciously qouted anything on that tune, but if you tell me where it lays time wise i'll check it.

there was another tune we did and i quoted about 4 bars from "My Country Tis Of Thee". then i bailed. i'm not sure at what point (amount of measures or time duration) you can get away w that before you're hauled off by the music gestapo.

Didn't hear any squirrels. Nice laid back background music kind of thing. These places that always say 'originals only ... I play my BMI-registered songs. I understand that the venue doesn't want to pay the licensing, but they should realize that the amount is negotiable - based on seating, how many days/nights a week you have music. Little art gallery a few towns over has had music 2 nights a month - and they charge $10 admission, includes refreshments and has told the players 'originals only' - and people have snuck in a few covers, and sure enough the licensers are after them now.

well, you have to know the owner of this place. he's not gonna pay these guys a dime of shakedown money 'cos he disagrees w the policy.

yeah, but i still like you anyway. (and thanks!)

as the saying goes..."be careful what you wish for".

here's another tune of mine "Gone Goodbye" (on geetar) from the same gig. we were scuffling for original tunes, so dug deep in the book and pulled out this one that we hadn't played in a good two yrs or so! and back then we had only performed it once or twice.

plenty of rust on this one.

you can't hear me directing traffic on this audio recording as i'm trying to communicate the geography of the tune... "A SECTION!"....."BRIDGE!"..."GO TO THE UNISON LINE!", but i can't wait to see the video w me playing "tour guide". that should be pretty humorous.

Jookeyman wrote:Yeah!! I like this one. I hear that same line you're mining from Hendrix in there but it has a twist.
Are you sure you didn't see Band of Gypsys @ the Fillmore?? Again, it's an easy but a cool move. Very melodic.

You and Monty have a special thing going on. My favorite part of this song was the bass solo. You and Monty are hooking up like a freight train driving that solo. Cool stuff!! 8)

once again i plead innocent to the charges of plagiarizing JH! :D

but i checked it out last time you pointed it out, and it IS a similar line!

monty is the man. i just LOVE playing w that guy, and after playing together for close to 30 yrs in different bands, we do have a pretty good hookup, and we totally play off one another.

it wasn't always that way though in PJAZZ. the original lineup had me on bass, and for the first cpl of yrs we had a killer keyboardist in the band. Monty and him had a long history of playing together. so, though monty and i did play off ea other....he really played more off the keys man. no problem...we still had a great hookup and the band grooved just fine.

but then the keys man moved out of town and that's when Monty and i REALLY started playing off one another and dialoging.

hmmm, that might make an interesting thread (or FORUM!)....musicians hooking up in a group....how/who/etc.

i read an interview w the great drummer Jim Keltner and he was taking about some of the great rhythm gtrsts he's played w...Lennon, John Hiatt, etc.....and he said that he doesn't necessarily take his cues from the bass player, but instead gravitates to whoever he feels has the best groove in the band, and the groove he most identifies with. i thought that made a lot of sense.
