Just finished watching this documentary! Wow, it's a must see for all musicians! I remember being blown away by this guy in the early 80's I also remember a bass player friend hungry for knowledge asking me who do you suggest I follow, my obvious reply was Pastorious. I have liked Glenn Hughes since 1976. Once met him and we had about 15 minute conversation backstage for a Trapeze reunion in the late 90s.

But it's his voice and songwriting that makes him great. He's a very good bass player but not on the same level as Jaco or Stanley.

along w "Mr. Gone" and "Heavy Weather"..."Black Market" is one of my fave WR albums (even though Jaco only played on two tunes).

then again...it's not like Alphonso Johnson was any kind of a slouch on bass!

I'm only about 45 min or so into the doc (just after the WR stuff and now Joni Mitchell is just getting into it) and i'm really digging it. i always wondered about how the transition from AJ to Jaco came about.....wow, that was quite a story!

'76 was a quite a yr for Jaco...his debut on "Black Market", his solo album, and maybe my favorite work of his....his huge contributions playing on Joni's "Hejira" album.

anyone who thinks Jaco was merely some shallow and flashy bass player needs to check out his playing on that "Hejira" album...that's some SERIOUSLY deep and soulful stuff he played there.

Yeah...to a degree. But I'd rather listen to Glen Hughes perform, I like the way he pushes it out somewhere between hard rock and metal. Is Jaco technically better? Maybe but it's apples to oranges isn't it? Jaco was swimming in a different musical pond.

I saw this documentary also and yes it was very good. What I found interesting is that I hang around some indie communities and whenever somebody decrees themselves the greatest they get attacked. Jaco didn't seem to run into that though.

No, he didn't. Know why?? He claimed this title for himself!!! He ran around telling everyone he was the best. This 'proclamation' and his ability to back it up were both products of his manic persona. The greatest?? IDK about that one. Greatness lies in the eyes and ears of the beholder.

What about Ron Carter, Charlie Hayden, Charles Mingus..................???

That's what I was saying, we see a lot of people calling themselves the greatest and it never works out well.
