yeah, planetguy got me to wondering how rusty I was on bass guitar, well, I can walk it, and I feel the rust shakin' off.. don't know if it is blues but think it will pas as R&B music..

i've got a good arm but that's a long toss!

i like the way you mixed up your note length. some short....some long. too many bassists ignore that. and the tone was cool too....it speaks w/o being too muddy but still has some girth.

First of all, thanks for all the kind responses..

Coltrane's Dream was started at 6:45 PM CST and finished at 8:45 PM CST, it was basically thrown together on the spot with little effort at polishing it or getting the notes correct, but it turned out relatively well for an improvised tune on the spot, no time to write charts to sight read..

.. when I read that A&M Records penalized The Carpenters $400,000.00 for the solo record that Karen put out in 1979, I said bullshit, it does not cost that much to put out a record, The Carpenters were screwed by them imo, and held to that penalty, basically putting a lien on future royalties.. did records really cost $400,000.00 to make in 1979? has digital interfaces with recording software really cut the costs that much?

i dunno. before coming to that conclusion about "Wild Horses" i'd have to hear the other versions and the genesis of how they came to that keeper arrangement.

the beatles were legendary for doing 30 or more different takes w different arrangements and experimenting to find the "right one".

"Wild Horses" IS a simple song.....but simple ain't always EASY.

and the album it's from...."Sticky Fingers".....i consider that their best. so what if they liked dicking around in the studio and trying different things. if i had their money to blow...that's EXACTLY how i'd be approaching things too.

"hey, let's try this fast" ."ok, cool...now let's try recording it slow". "ooooh, i have an idea....how about we try it in 3/4?"....."hmmm, let's record another w a samba feel"......

You may not care for their dissonant tunes but they were written, rehearsed and PLAYED REPEADEDLY for years. This was NOT improvisation. It was written, memorized and played note for note. My hat's off to John French who arranged this cacophony and the band for playing such difficult material.

apples and oranges.

there's something to be said for each approach. each is valid.

and there's nothing wrong w "through composed music", but i prefer hearing musicians in the room reacting in the moment and making THEIR choices about what the music needs at any (and every) particular moment. or at least not sounding like everything is worked out. ...but that's me.
