Back from Mexico

Missed my guitars! Only instrument(s?) I bought were a set of marracas for $5. Other than some claves (basically 2 sticks) and toy guitars there was nothing anywhere. Saw a few mariachi bands - a trio with 2 guitars and an upright bass, a full band with 2 trumpets and violin player, and a duo who came into a restaurant one night with a Mexican harp and small guitar - had never heard one of these harps before. The player plays both bass lines on the long strings and an arpeggiated rhythm/lead part on the short strings, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLCop4aFrpY

While I was away I got a pro set up on my Taylor and some straplocks installed on it too. I've had a couple of close calls with it - no more!

Looks like WIllie was here again and banned again (judging from missing posts).

Mike

By coincidence I was talking with a bass player from a Mariachi band - never seen one like it before (or at least, never recognized it for what it was).

cheers

Guatamalan? I would guess it's diatonic, not chromatic... no?

I did hear a marimba band at one restaurant, we didn't eat there, we were just walking by.

Here's me at Chichen Itza:

Never saw a mosquito the whole visit, never a bug bite (had some strong DEET with me, too). Saw a few sandfleas on the beach, but even they didn't bite.

Mark - you think I would go INTO a 2000-year-old structure made of huge stone blocks? Can't even climb on the ruins since Hurricane Wilma did all the damage in that area 8 years ago.
