I saw two bands on a bill at a radio station fest in 93 (we went to see 311).

One was a Ministry kind of thing called Mona Lisa Overdrive. I got their (only) CD and loved it, despite being only 32 minutes long. I found out later that the leader of the band was a longtime Zappa sideman. They disappeared into obscurity.

Also on the bill, the Supreme Love Gods. They put on an incredibly funky set. I got their (only) CD and loved it. They played between grunge and disco. Extremely intelligent lyrics and arrangements. Never to be heard from again.

Coincidentally, on the same bill, I was introduced to Sky Cries Mary. Not mainstream, but pretty obscure. They had many albums and tours and have reunited several times. I can put them on the back burner for a while, then I put them on and their hippie music just carries me off into some kind of black light poster or something.....

Ramatam - Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell, Mike Pinera on guitar (Blues Image, Iron Butterfly) and APril Lawton on guitar and vocals. Saw them open for Ten Years After.

Carbon Leaf - still-active band from Richmond, VA, doing it 'all themselves' after shucking off the record label that did nothing for them . They tour a couple times a year, playing venues of 250-500, self-release 1-2 albums a year.

Saw a band called "Kix" in the late 70s in Beaumont. It was a .99 cent concert at the Civic Center so everyone in town went, though no one had heard of them and it was one of the best concerts I ever saw. The singer was phenomenal, and the guitar players would put their headstocks together and the singer would do a flip over them while singing. Recently found out that singer was Billy Squire .

There was a band called "Crack the Sky" out of Canada that was an art rock band, very technical. Loved 'em.

Most of the music I own is by obscure bands so this could go on for days....

But yea, BOA was hardly obscure. I had three friends who played in BOA (several versions later), and hired them away from Jim Dandy in the late 80s for the last rock band I played in. He was notorious for spending all the money on coke before the band got paid, so he went through members pretty quickly.

Their live album was one of my favs....still do that bass solo today when I pick up a bass.

.

in more of a "rock" vein....

WLIR (the long gone great Long Island radio station) used to broadcast live concerts and one night i got the old cassette recorder going when they were hosting The Dirty Angels. hadn't heard of them before but they were great. and i still listen to that recording to this day. i was disappointed when i picked up their album in acut out bin and it lacked the balls to the wall energy of that live recording where they really stretched out w lots of twin gtr leads and solos....even a cpl of happening bass solos.

back in '73/ 74 Queensborough College put on some free summer concerts. we never heard of Tranquility but hey, it was free concert! they come out on stage, assume their positions.....and the lead singer throws his tambourine about 50 ft straight up in the air. when it came down and he plucked it out of the air....the band hit the downbeat and was off and running! we all thought that was pretty cool!

"The Misunderstood" were a great local SoCal band back in the 60s. They used to play free summer concerts in Fairmont Park and were one of my early rock influences. Good pull Vinny!

Another fun obscure band from that era, The Sonics
