My preference on my Tele has always been 9s - 9- 11- 16- 24- 32- 42 seems to be the standard for these.
On my semi-hollow Dot, I use jazz strings, 12-16-24-32-42-52 with a wound G, only way I found the G string intonation to be good. It was weird switching to this gauge after decades of only using 9s on other electrics!

Does it extrapolate the ideal set of whatever you were talking about, the "square of the diameter" of each string? What does the ideal set look like in that regard?

My Led Zep complete songbook has an introduction that talks about how Jimmy Page would string his guitars by tossing the low E string, moving every string up one notch and putting an A string from a banjo in the high E slot. It said he did this so he could perform the craziest bends imaginable. I've never tried it, nor would I.

it seems much ado about nothing and a non issue to me. i've never owned a gtr or bass where one string was crazy louder than the others to the point of distraction. D'Addario has recently started marketing a "balanced" bass set that is supposed to give the strings an even feel of tension but they don't hawk it as evenly balanced volume wise.

my prefs:

Fenders 10-46 (exception being my "jazz tele" a thinline that wears 11-48 flatwounds*)
Gibson scale 11-48
archtops 12-54 (change the E and B to 13 and 17)
flat tops 12-54

basses:
4 string 40 - 95
6 string 29- 130 Carvin strings

*i've got an afternoon winery gig this afternoon.....we'll be inside in close quarters so that tele gets the job today...i'm really excited about playing it later as it's been neglected since the Guild X150 has joined the team!
