On a recent PLANET JAZZ gig i had my gypsy jazz gtr along. At break someone came up after noticing it, and requested Django's "Minor Swing".....it's an ok tune and certainly a standard of Gypsy Jazz repertoire, but i couldn't help thinking it's sorta what "Proud Mary" is to R&R or "When The Saints...." is to Dixieland.

I played it for him and he was happy enough to drop a ten into the tip jar. (just another day at the office keeping the customers happy).

I've seen this song played slow and the detail of precision is quite immense but I love it fast, wild and sloppy. Just get crazy with this song.

hmmm, i've never heard it anything but medium-up to PDQ tempos.... like the tempo we're playing it at here at the 16:30 mark... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNnIgNl1EKg

i could see how it might work at a slower tempo. let the record show...i can bring the slop at any tempo! 8)
