one of the founding members of The Crusaders.....he was a most capable saxophonist but also a great bass player who played on many sessions.

on sax w The Crusaders....here's three of their better known and widely covered tunes (P-Jazz does these and we'll most certainly be playing them at our gigs this week)

sadly, he's really been overlooked as a bassplayer.

he really embodies the aesthetic that i TRY to go for.....taking care of business AND playing w some personality. you can't help noticing his playing, but it never gets in the way, or detracts from the vocals or the soloist. high art there.

here's what might be my favorite work of his "Sing My Songs To Me" by J Browne....i love how he plays SOOOOO simply AND with soooo much personality. he stays with pedaling a D as the chords change from "D" to "G" and then when he finally does start acknowledging the chord changes....wow.

the real beauty is how they grafted the next song up "For Everyman" onto the end of "Sing My Songs to Me"....a different session w entirely different players, and i guess they were playing along w the first tune at the end and just picked it up from there... (Leland Sklar is on bass for "Everyman" and it's interesting to hear their contrasting styles)
