^ damn, i wonder if Bo Diddley knew his bass went missing!

here's the great Willie Weeks backing up Steve Winwood. Andy Newmark on drums. damn, that's a tight rhythm section.

Laird was always a solid take care of business bass player. I read he'd hung up music to pursue photography. I have a wonderful album w Gerry Neiwood (reeds) and Dave Samuels (mallets) and Laird is the glue that makes that album hum. he plays mostly upright and though it sounds a little dated i've always dug the " '7o's upright tone" when it seems all the bassists had p/u's on their instrument and played thru small amps (usually Polytones)

here's a cut from that album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSZaX8fSlmk

I was never a big M.O fan. Though i can certainly appreciate them as players. Their music never did much for me, not enough grease...too much dissonance...their odd stuff always FELT like it was odd time....and their unsion lines always turned me off (same for Zappa when he overused the unison stuff).

i love listening to the great upright players when they pick up an electric....

here's Ron Carter's great percolating 16th note groove on Gil Scott Heron's "When You Are Who You Are"

points for Bernard Purdie on drums!
