How about those suckers that paid $1,000 and under for their Les Pauls? Is there no mercy?

When they gig do they have to wear three grocery bags over their heads when they play that clunk so one will recognize them? (Three in case an overly enthusiastic fans rush the bandstand and tear one or two off of your head during a performance.)

Just another reason I play a Strat and hide my Les Pauls in the closet. But once in a while, when I'm sure no one will stop over, I try to play one of them.

Strat is so versatile. I just hate the looks. It's stuck in the Buddy Holly era.
A Jag, Jazz, Mustang, Tele or something else has about 100% more sex appeal.

That's like saying you only have a flat head screwdriver and won't use a Phillips head. I play both, each has its application. Using one type of anything gives your music a one-dimensional sound.

ya know, i give the marketing people at GIBSON and FENDER a lot credit.

there must be at least twenty different versions of strats and LP's...and plenty of teles and P-basses and J-basses too. are they really all that different (strat to strat, LP to LP)???? nah....but these marketing geniuses know that collectors and even your average Joe is gonna plunk down bucks on the latest incarnation/variation on the same theme. ooooh, oooh a Billy Armstrong Autograph Model...i MUST HAVE ONE!!!!

i used to play w a gtrst who'd bring three custom shop strats to the gig. they were all rosewood f/brd and had the same p/u's. the difference...they were different colors! he'd set them up on his side of the stage...then walk out onto the dance floor...check how they looked...then go back and rearrange them more to his liking!


aw schmed, say it ain't so.....Strats NOT sexy???? damn, to each his own but i think Strats might be THE sexiest gtr EVER! and don't get me wrong, i LOVE my teles....but sexy???? well, not so much so.

Strats are great - I have one and love it. Have a nice Tele as well.

But for six string guitar my go to axe is the Firebird - there is something about it that feels exactly right and it certainly has its own sound.

Since I finally found a Gibson I actually like I'm thinking of revisiting the Paul - I don't like the weight or the neck but love the sound. Maybe it will work for me now - have to wait until at least one of my ships comes sailing in however!

that's exactly why i acquired the "THE PAUL" (got to be THE stoopidiest name ever). it's got the LP tones and vibe bit without the maple cap, it's got a nice manageable weight.

all my gtr gigs these days are jazz gigs and though i've used it on those and it ain't too shabby, well...i've got a few others that get invited to the dance first. so....it needs to go so i can get me a nice vintage acoustic Guild.

speaking of weight....i recently put a Bigsby on my late 70's Washburn HB35 (thinline semi-hollow/think 335)....an already heavy gtr. and now w the Bigsby, damn that's one heavy gtr!

What I really don't get are the "relic-ed" models - they take a perfectly good-looking guitar, then scrape the paint off to make it look 30 years old - or even apply fake rust/patina to the hardware.

You are Sooooooo right. The first time I held a Strat on my knee I looked down at the curved figure on the top edge and it looked like it was molded. I couldn't believe that someone had sculpted something so beautiful in a guitar as opposed to just a slightly arched top or a blocky wood cutout. The Strat is the most copied and still the best selling guitar in the world so evidently some musicians must agree.

I was used to Gibson and old Epiphone big band style arch top guitars. I have had about everything since I did a lot of repair for around 6-7 music stores and often traded guitars with customers all the time. But the Strat is (At this time) my all time favorite. I also think that Paul's are pretty, but nothing compared to my Strats. And not nearly as comfortable to hold all night.

Incidentally this thread was started as a joke about a fresh piece of wood costing $11,000 and taking a dig at what made it so much better than any other Les Paul. (I have two Les Pauls, One very old tobacco sunburst one and a newer Epiphone Cherry Sunburst. My Epi is made far better than my early Gibson.

My first guitar was a "Stella" flat top with strings about 1" from the fingerboard. My first "real" guitar was a Gibson Melody Maker that I bought new in 60. After that I went right to big "F" hole arch tops. Gotta love those beasts as they truly are works of art.

My first guitar was a Strella as well! I paid five bucks and five hits of speed for that rascal in '68.

I had a very nice strat but I just couldn't work the neck so I swapped for a sweet Tele with a maple neck (and some money) - worked better.

But I ran into a Stratocaster Lone Star model (HSS) and it had a maple neck. I love those wide Fender necks. The ex said no - I said yes! That's a very nice American made machine with a lot of balls. It was worth the flack I took and it was my go to for several years - it's still my backup.
