I did some googling then went to Ken Stanton Music (whom I trust). I walked away with a Yamaha 66 key synthesizer / keyb etc plus stand for under 200.00 bucks.

Also has all sorts of MIDI doodadery and USB connection etc. I haven't even figured out how to use all of it yet.

Ironically - I bought it to record drums which it can do but which I found counter intuitive on a keyb. I love the Yamaha though - has just the voicings I want - been playing it a lot.

Josh Chimera wrote:"Illest" would depend on your particular needs and budget.

What kind of sounds best fit your musical style and tastes. Do you want a full digital 'workstation with sampled & synth sounds, or a more specialized sort of analog synth?

Check out some stores online to get an idea of what is available in a given price range.

Then try looking up that keyboard on youtube where you may find different examples of it's sounds in the context of different styles.

You might be able to try some out at the Guitar Center or other store near you, if they have them in stock.

If you find one or more contenders, look them up on ebay and Craigslist where you may find a great bargin.

(I wish I could afford one of those Moog Phatty's that allow for alternate just intonation tunings)

josh...once again you prove yourself to be nothing but a gov't shill trying to distract and disrupt. no one here is impressed by this, your latest irrelevant cartoon.

we are all on to your game of hijacking threads, jumping in w nothing on point, and instead banging the drum for the gubment. troll, troll, troll.

we're on to you fellah!

Head to your nearest music store to see what they've got used. Otherwise under $200 gets you a very limited device. The Casio WK models (I've got an older one) and Yamaha keys over $200 all offer good built-in sounds - look for lineout jacks, MIDI (most of these lower-end keyboards use USB for MIDI which is fine unless you want to drive another MIDI device with it).

Pretty much sums up my thoughts! :P

I got a Korg micro xl. It was $500 at the time, but I think they're about $457 new (probably $200 -$250 used?).

Only problem, 3/4 size keys, which doesn't bother me too much. I'm a guitar/ bass guy.
It makes every sound on the radio, ever. Compact, too.

Josh Chimera wrote:Probably no interest to the OP .. but hey, it's ok, I'm a troll!

Casio CTK 5000-6000 and WK 6500 keyboards allow for micro tonal adjustment for each key of the octave. There's a dozen or so Indian, Persian, Turkish, etc intonation presets, plus you can program it with custom intonations of your own. I found a used one for $100. Downside is the undefeatable cheesy vibrato on most sounds. :(

If one happens to like analog type of sounds, the Alesis Micron is a good deal used at about $150-200 range

That's OK. I'm a troll, myself. Hell, you seem like a mighty fine troll, Josh! A troll's troll.

Good suggestions. Non 12 steppers. I like it.
