picked up a two month old used Guild F130RCE ac/el yesterday for $450. chinese made yes, but VERY impressive for a solid wood instrument that retails for under 1K. (i believe the street price is around $950)
solid spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, cutaway, scalloped X bracing, Fishman p/u system, and TKL hard case.
full story and review in the next cpl of days....perhaps i might even knock off a video demo or two. (uh oh! run for the hills!)

Congratulations!
I got to play a friend's new Gretsch guitar this evening. I didn't like it - never have liked Gretsch - but I darn sure respected it. Well made, solid and much heavier I think, than the old ones.
It's cool to see brands like Gretsch, Vox and Orange making come backs.

That's a good deal - about 1/2 price of a new one. I played a couple of Guilds 2 months ago, not a bad acoustic sound at all for Chinese. How do you like the Fishman Sonitrol (I think that's the name) electric sound?

I looked at and felt of several of these Guild guitars at a local shop some time ago when shopping for an inexpensive EA for a particular project.
They all looked, felt and sounded good acoustically. I did not pursue to hear one 'plugged in' as the list price was outside my budget range for said project.
Ended up with a Yamaha, which I will likely sell or trade in the near future.
It fills the role of a traveling practice piece. That's about the extent of it.
It's always a thrill to have a new toy.
Enjoy !

A couple of years ago when I was shopping for a new EA for use in the Beatles tribute band I tried out the Yammies in the $250-$400 range and was not impressed with the sound/feel of them at all (I never plugged them in), but a lot of guys over at the acousticguitarforum praise them for the low price entry market. Then again those guys have problems in cutting Fender acoustic to the core, but I found one that I quite liked - for $200 used out the door. Of course they don't make this particular model any more (CD140sce), I think they have too many models very close to each other so this one got cut.

I've not used the Sonitrol system (wonder if that's what trolls use!) out of the house yet, but at " house volume" i am impressed. it really captures the "acoustence" of the gtr... it's quite representative of the unplugged tone...only louder.
i do like the idea of not having a big hole cut into the side of the gtr for the typical preamp and controls. i thought i might miss the flex of those systems though (3 band EQ, notch filter, tuner, etc) as the Sonitrol has only a small thumbscrew knob for vol and one for tone stealthily mounted at the top of the soundhole.

Talbot...i quite agree w your take on Gretsch gtrs. they be some heavy mofos! the only Gretsch i ever owned was a '50's Synchromatic. straight up acoustic archtop w nice weight, great playabilty, and a real nice "dry" and woody tone. I ended up trading it for '66 non reverse Gibson Thunderbird.....sadly also long gone.
i'd give YOUR right nut to have EITHER of those back again!
Sans, Cajun Daddy....very nice to see you around these parts. i hope you guys are doing well, getting to play some good gigs, enjoyable music, and hopefully you're not just passing thru!

Planet
There are still Firebirds out there.
A couple months ago I sent a whiny email to my brother complaining about how life had kicked me in the ass.
He replied, "You have a white Firebird! Now shut up and stop complaining!"
He was right. The guitar has mojo - the guys at the music store all love it too. I bought a cheap guitar stand for one of my back up guitars the other day and this cat said, "Whoa - you're not going to put the Firebird in that!" They fix it for free and treat me well - but I know it's the guitar, not me!
I'm very blessed. I've owned many guitars and basses but ultimately only three 'mojo' instruments - two of them were basses and the FB is the third.

Thank you for the welcome.
As for music, yes we have been quite busy.
Not without issues or problems, but that's life.
Actually been working with our Lead Guitarist, Drummer & Bassist on some covers ( shock n awe, I know ... right )
The majority of my parts in Jericho March are heavy rhythm or distorted guitar undertones.
AJ and Floyd have been helping me with my technique, acoustic guitar and using first position chords more.
They have massive experience in the music world, and apparently the patience of Jonah.
These men are walking encyclopedias of classic rock.
I am blessed to be under their tutelage.

Yep Planet I'm still around but haven't been posting as much. We wrapped up the Johnny 7 Band last year after 10 years of playing together and a few different projects came along. My latest iteration is The Road Dogs which is really following in the footsteps of cover bands like Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Three Dog Night, and the Commitments. Still a rock band but more vocally focused and more R&B vibe. We have done a couple of shows so far and we work together very with very little ego in the room. I am having a blast and looking forward to the car show/street fair season coming up.
Good to see George popping his head in here again as well. Hello George!
