"$10 register fee" - you make people pay $10 for $7 minutes of play time? Really? Good f***ing luck! The only thing I'v eever paid for at an open mic is my beer, and the only thing ever charged was the venue that I hosted at. Players never pay. I hope no one shows up at yours. Money making scheme for the clueless.

I despise this practice of club owners asking folks to pay them for the right to entertain them.
To pay someone for entertaining them is an insult.
Any time I've hit an open mike that wants to charge me to play, I leave, and tell everyone I know to avoid the place.
Why on earth anyone would PAY to play is beyond me . . .

the sad thing is there will always a large segment of "musicians" desperate to play out in front of people. for a long a time it's been folks willing to play for free for that op.....and this is just the next step in the DE-evolutionary scale.

obvious downside of it all is that it gets harder and harder for the real musicians to get a fair wage for what we do.

just earlier today i unloaded at someone at the gym. he's a wanna be half assed musician and a good enough guy. he was telling me about a freebie he's playing at tomorrow at a restaurant. he justified it w the usual "well, they won't PAY to have music...so this way i get to play in front of some people".

But note that even a nursing home needs PRO licenses if you are playing covers for free.

I'm sure the song gestapo monitor those gigs very closely. We played them for years once every month. :)
