I prefer to do harmonies, because of all the endless possibilities.
But some songs I like to sing lead, too . . .

I really like to hear songs with several harmonies at once.
Yeah, different songs ask for different harmonies.
Some songs don't need them as much, and others are begging for more.
I don't hear as many harmonies on the radio, anymore . . .
.
I remember hearing performers singing 2 different songs right on top of each other.. . . different melodies, different rhythms, but the 2 songs fit together wonderfully.

Big bands in the 40's also featured a lot of quartets for great harmonies. Same with Motown. Most were quite good.

TheFarleys wrote:The hay-day for harmony vocals in popular music was in the 70's, when CSN&Y, The Eagles and even hard rock acts like Uriah Heep layered 3 and 4 part harmonies in their music. Current popular music doesn't have as much need for vocal harmonies, and when they are needed it is easier to use harmonizers and other technologies.

.
Yeah, I agree.
But I'd maybe push the time frame a little earlier, dunno.
But, you're right.
. . . remember
- Mommas & the Poppas, Simon & Garfunkle . . .
. . . and , earlier . . .
- Peter, Paul & Mary
. . . and . . . does anyone hear remember a group called "The Association?" Acapella, 8 part harmonies.
The group "Straight, no Chaser" is the modern equivalent, I guess . . . those guys are entertaining.

With the band I'm in now I do lots of both lead and harmony vocals, not sure which one I like better...

Always have liked singing lead, and have done loads of harmonies too, so I guess it makes little difference to me.

Yeah I remember the Association, can't think of the name of their big hit I used to sing along with many moons ago.

There's also Poco, Outlaws, Little River Band, Doobie Brothers, America, and of course the Beatles...

I always liked the Associations "Along Came Mary," which, now that I think about it, had a cool guitar part in it, too.

I'm surprised the poll response is split so evenly, and kinda happy about it, too.
I guess I expected most folks would want to sing lead.
.
I think the split responses might be indicative of true musicians/singers, here.
You know, folks who are in it primarily for making good music.
What do you think?
.
There is a certain percentage of folks in bands more in it for the "look at ME!" syndrome.
It seems folks here know about teamwork.
.
(yes/no/maybe)?
