My gut instincts tell me it was intentional.
And that is dishonest.
Your choosing of course . . . me . . . I'd make em off my list in bold black sharpie

Sorry to hear that. What's even worse is when you drive all the way across town for a gig walk into the venue and find another band setting up. Then you go ask the manager what's going on and they say sorry we double booked and they are here first so they get the gig. Happened to me back in 97. I will say these things happen and it sadly is just part of the game! Another reason I'm early for gigs. I have also been in the band that arrived and started setting up. We got the gig. I have been on both sides of this unfortunate situation.

Bummer but it happens. We had a double booking twice in the last few years. In both cases we were there first and set up so the other band got bumped. One of the other guitarists got in my face and demanded we share the gig and the $$ for the night. I told them it was not up to me, see the owner and work it out with them. They got sent home.
We have also been called off from a Fri night of a two night gig a few times. Bummer but it was a regular client who pays well and always took care of us. We work with those guys when they are in a bind and they give us additional dates when they can. A good working relationship with a club we played for over 10 years.

Bob, don't take this personally but you are dreaming if you think that local airplay is going to be that substantial, or that anyone will even hear it. And that attitude is going to ensure you never play the same place twice.
So you can be pissed that I told you that, or you can accept it from someone who has been in that world for decades. My guess is you will do the former, but I'm trying to help you.

Yep, most places only want to put drinks in peoples hands so they care little about the music. It could be Hungarian polka for all they care as long as it brings people in and sells drinks. We choose our venues pretty carefully and nearly always have a written contract. Even then we will work with a regular client if things go sideways on their end. We are all human and we all screw up sometimes. There have been a few nights over the last 10 years that we were "less than excellent" as entertainment but they still honored the deal and called us back again.
Long term relationships with organizations that continue to pay us well is more important to me than any single night. I really try to not take this stuff personally and avoid burning bridges at all cost.

Good word, Dave. Actually you can use a situation like this to your benefit....especially if you play Hungarian polka!
If you're cool about it, and let them know that you're disappointed, but totally understand that stuff happens, they might bend over backwards to make up for it in the future. It's always good to remember that we're ALL in the music biz together. Most clubs that have live music could do something else that wouldn't be as much hassle. They have live music because they like live music...but they don't owe you anything until you've shown them you care about their business.
Treat 'em like friends and it might pay off in spades. Treat 'em like jerks and that's all your gonna get from them.

I lost the midrange hearing in my left air due to this crap. Playing a joint in Underground Atlanta - we found out they had forgotten we were coming and left the other band's gear up assuming they'd be in - they weren't.
I had to play through another guy's amp (Sun Coliseum) and trying to get the settings right while playing a song I stupidly put my ear right up to the speaker. Ouch.
Things happen. And thank God we have Electronic tuners.

oohhh...bummer.
Not directed at anyone in particular..but when ya get a little leverage you can burn bridges to make yourself feel better, but it's still a dumb thing to do. You never know if that guy is going to get a job at Sony records in the future...or be the cop that pulls you over late one night.
I have ticked off a lot of people with my opinions and attitudes...but not (good) customers or employers if I can help it.
