Satirical commentary

Did any of you catch Woody Harrelson on SNL last weekend? In his opening monologue he brought up Taylor Swift's album 1989 and that 'with all due respect to Ms taylor, I think I know a little more about 1989 - I was there!' and the did a short comedy song. Obvisoulsy not written by him, part of the whole skit - along wiht the othe ractors form the Hunger Games who came out to sing along with him.

I thought it was a fun idea, so quickly penned a song Monday, and played it last night, got a few laughs (comedy really is NOT my forte).
Some of the people on a songwriting forum (not naming it here) evidently are big Taylor Swift fans and took exception to my lyrics. Of course the song is not really about her, and the fact is that she released a new album (1989) which is pop fluff, not the country music that won her all sorts of awards.

the intro is done to the tine of Zager & Evans 'In The Year 2525', but only the intro.

1989

(Intro)
In the year 1988
Taylor Swift hadn't born yet, things were great ...

(Verse 1)
In 1989 I was all of 33
Living the good life, high and free
The future didn't matter, at least not for me
All I needed was enough time to party

(Prechorus)
When did things start to go wrong
When did meaning go out of the songs

(Chorus)
1989, the wall came crashing down
GPS and IPOs started, the world kept going round
Can't say I remember, but there must have been a sign
The world started going to hell in 1989

(Verse 2)
In 1989 music producers took us for fools
Hits from Madonna, the Bangles and frickin' Paula Abdul
Can't blame Ms. Swift, it that's what she learned in school
1989 was the start of music being uncool

(Prechorus)
When did things start to go wrong
When did meaning go out of the songs

(Chorus)
1989, the wall came crashing down
George Bush Senior was president, the world kept going round
Can't say I remember, but there must have been a sign
The world started going to hell in 1989

Can't say I remember, but there must have been a sign
The world started going to hell in 1989
The world started going to hell in 1989

good stuff, mikey.

i was hearing the music to "In The Yr 2525" throughout...maybe the followup can use the music and lyric form of Sinatra's hit "When I Was 17" !

'When I Was 17' is so boring. Maybe 'When I Was Young' (the Animals), which I also played last night?

I think parody songs - songs that take a song and re-do the lyrics - work better when you have a lyric-writing team - does Weird Al Y write all of his lyrics solo?

I thought of doing this whole hting to '2525', but opted for original music for everything but the intro (which does capture people's attention).

Good song, Mike. I prefer most other Sinatra tunes (that I've heard) over "When I Was 17".
He was never a songwriter, correct? Just singing other's compositions?
