Is it really that much more advantageous to combine two bands in your tribute? There's a local tribute advertising on cl for a bassist. I click on it because it says"Ramones Tribute". Then I find out that it's a Ramones/ Clash Tribute. Ya lost me. It seems polarizing. Just my opinion.

tribute bands have always creeped me out.

(ever so ) slightly less skin crawl if they're not trying to dress up as the original group.

The costume thing is quite tacky.
I was in a Beatles tribute band, as many of you know, for about 9 months, until we broke up (no costumes!). It was actually a lot of work to learn how to play the songs accurately.
I think musicians, as a whole, don't really appreciate tribute bands much, its more the fans (of the original) that like them. If you've got a market - places to play that will pay, go for it!

it is a bit creepy. I suppose it creates a sort of 'farm team' for the big guys in case of problems. There is a fellow on the forum (sorry, name?) who does a Ozzie thing pretty well and having fun is the name of this game.

I Just have no desire to play anybody's covers really.

i will admit that at this moment I'm more creeped out by it than usual. I found out recently that there are re-enactment groups dressing up as my old military outfit. Made me feel plenty weird I can tell you.

I think it limits your creativity and forces you to be something you are not.


Back in my teenage years, my band would do "tribute" in the form of 30 minute non-stop medleys from the Beatles, Aerosmith, Lynard Skynard, Robert Palmer, The Police, Zep, Cars, Hendrix, etc.

I might put on some dark glasses for singing the Cars, or a leather hat for Skynard... but I could just say a couple of band names before a set and everyone would know which 14 songs (and the order) we were going to play for the next hour.

Rollins was really amazing!!! He did a "Coltrane" style extended solo over Tyner's modal comping. Never heard Sonny play that way before!

Hey if it is fun, go for it. No harm, no foul. It's not my cup-o-tea but I have seen some very good ones.

I was invited to play in a Heart Tribute band but even though I do mostly covers these days, I need to move things around a bit. And the two Wilson sister wannabees were REALLY creepy.
